Description

This is also when I paint the scroll on the bolter. It’s Rakarth Flesh shaded with Agrax Earthshade and highlighted with Agrax and Reaper Polished Bone. The outbreak of the Horus Heresy would see Legio torn asunder, those loyal to the Imperium and those to Arachnus. The latter became known as Legio Tritonis, named after the three bodies of Arachnus. I started off with Contrast Talassar Blue on the pants and Contrast Guilliman Flesh for the skin. I then moved onto Contrast Snakebite Leather for all of the leather bits

Also, remember that models look good with contrast, so many painters not only use the recesses, but use weathering -- like in the pictures above, or the Tau Stormsurge. You'll notice tha the ochre versions look pretty good clean, but all the white versions are muddied up. That's because an unweathered white Stormsurge would look like a plastic Gundam model unpainted -- just too plasticy and with too little depth. Emma: This is a fantastic shade for making things look grimy, but not too dark or green – perfect for the Death Guard . It also looks great over silver metals and light bone colours, and works a treat for the worn gear of Orks and Chaos alike. Love it.

Step 3. Yellow Bits

The other big color of note is the red. I wanted something earthy so I started with VMC Burnt Red and blended up to VMC Flat Red and then VMC Brown Ochre. Ochre is great for the desert-y look I’m going for here. There’s a fair bit of free hand going on here in terms of honour markings, squad marks, and company markings but it’s simpler than it looks. The key to these things is to plan your shapes out (White Scars are all about straight lines and jagged triangles) and thin your paint more than normal. I trace my outlines out with very thin paint and get those well-defined and then follow up by filling in with color. If you can draw a straight line, you can do this. It’s worth noting that this approach doesn’t really lend itself to clean-up due to the airbrushed armor but weathering can always help in hiding mistakes. Emma: Spooky but soft at the same time, Soulblight Grey shades with a light grey tone, perfect for the ghoulish skin and dirty bones of Grand Alliance Death models. I like using it over Screaming Skull for that weathered Deathrattle Skeleton bone, then drybrushing up from there.

In early 2018 I set out to put together a 1000 point Zone Mortalis force of Horus Heresy era White Scars which I was attracted to because the chapter was rarely seen in the 30K community. The few White Scars armies you would see would almost always be the stereotypical flood of bikes and I wanted to do something unique.Necrons: The sleek and angular machinery of the Necron army can be effectively shaded with Drakenhof Nightshade to give a dark, ominous appearance. The wash can be used to create shadows on the sharp edges of tanks, guns, and other vehicles, giving them a sense of depth and dimensionality.

Add in more Dark Reaper and layer up, concentrating on the outer edges and raised areas. This is subtle but will build up. You can see how much better a couple of very thin coats of VMC White worked, so that will lead to Step 2… Step 2 Credit: Richyp With all that in mind, let’s take a look at a 1750 point list which takes advantage of the unique rules Legio Venator offers. This one’s a bit different than usual, but can be downright nasty in the right hands. Legio Venator Battlegroup – 1750 pts Extergimus Heavy Maniple Add in a little more Mephiston Red and layer up again, concentrating on raised areas where light would hit This step is a more traditional zenithal. I’ll spray from directly above and roll down the sides only enough to get almost full coverage on the most exposed areas like the shoulder pads and head. Step 4: Sponging Leadbelcher Credit: Ghazk

The Hair

Finally, I’ll do a pretty generous sponging of Leadbelcher. Paying special attention to get any long sharp edges. This step really adds a lot of contrast to the white and brings out a lot of detail. Finish: The rest of the details. Credit: Ghazk OhDearGodNo paints a slightly more traditional and brighter White Scars army, which looks truly fantastic. He does need to clean out his spray booth, though.

Glaze all over with extremely thinned Guilliman Blue, about 1:4 glaze to Lahmian Medium (I understand this is an OOP color, Talassar Blue from the Contrast range would work as well, but probably thinned 1:6 due to the stronger color) Wash everything in Nuln Oil. This will give everything a dirty, used look. Be careful not to let wash form pools on flatter areas, otherwise you’ll wind up with ugly coffee stains. I frequently have this happen to me, so do as I say, not as I do. This list isn’t built to have any specific pairings, but instead will create ad hoc squadrons depending on how the game plays out. Each of the Titans has pretty respectable anti-void output, and any of them can put some serious hurt on exposed armour if they get a shot. This is very much going to be a “divide and conquer” list.I wasn’t happy with how grey the result was so I did a test on a couple of armour panels using thinned Vallejo Model Colour (VMC) White… Credit: Richyp Emma: Tyran Blue is a lovely bright blue shade that looks great over light blues, and also creates some esoteric colour combinations when applied over silver and gold. Iron Hands Steel with a coat of Tyran Blue and a Stormhost Silver highlight gives you lovely magical steel, for instance. The Citadel Colour paint wizards have also created seven new Shade paints, adding even more options to your toolkit alongside perennial favourites like Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade . Here’s Emma to provide her expert advice on using these new tools. In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look how to paint well, everything, with a look at different techniques and approaches from different artists. Today we’re looking at the White Scars space marines.
