I chose to study here as it was the perfect course for me. I like how the school runs as it would be in the industry rather in a class room setting. I also love the number of different skills we learn within costume construction and supervision. Robert, having become aware early on of the dangers to the environment of emissions from aircraft, sold out to the industry, only to turn in later life into a prophet of doom. He has also become estranged from his three daughters: Sarah, a Lib Dem environment minister; Freya, pregnant and suicidal; and Jasmine, a hedonistic student. Angela is the Head of Design at the School and has worked on the set and costume design for our first show of the term, Earthquakes in London. Researchers from Imperial College discovered two faults, one running under central London and another below Canary Wharf.

In May 2022 a massive 5.1 earthquake had people’s homes "rattling" for minutes as the tremors were felt in parts of northern Scotland. It was reported to have happened at 5.23am off the coast of North East of Shetland and was felt in Shetland, Aberdeen, Ellon, Stonehaven, Helmsdale, Inverurie, Lairg, Huntly, Banff and Fraserburgh, according to The British Geological Survey. Magnitudes are local magnitude (ML) and are calculated to one decimal place, as is standard practice in earthquake seismology. The play centres on the lives and loves of three sisters, abandoned long ago by their doom-mongering father. The father is a prominent climate scientist played by Bill Paterson who predicts environmental apocalypse. The eldest sister ( Lia Williams) is a cabinet minister who plans to halt all airport expansion, choosing environment over economy. The middle sister ( Anna Madeley) is heavily pregnant and growing increasingly depressed about the uncertain future her child is being born into. The youngest sister is a rebellious teenager and frequent nuisance to her career-minded eldest sister. As the three women attempt, in their own different ways, to come to terms with the fact that their father's pessimistic forecasts may be right, Freya, the middle sister, contemplates suicide to avoid bringing her child into an apocalyptic future and an opportunity presents itself for reconciliation with their estranged misanthropic father. The enemy is on its way, but this time it doesn't have guns and gas it has storms and earthquakes, fire and brimstone.... You were the glimmer. At the end of the tunnel. And you went out. The sudden destruction of Lisbon by an earthquake and tsunami in 1755 exerted an influence on 18th-century Europe as far-reaching as the obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombs in the 20th century. This is epitomised by Voltaire’s 1759 novel, Candide, satirising religious explanations of the disaster and the philosophy of optimism. In May 2015, one of Yateley School's AS Drama groups performed the play. The next day, an earthquake was reported in Kent.

The most recent, notable, earthquake to hit England was felt in Leighton Buzzard on September 8, 2020. This earthquake was slightly larger in size than most of the earthquakes we see in the UK. To tell stories better! I felt like I was starting to develop a kind of methodology as a director, and I wanted to a space to scrutinise that process and make it better. To spend time thinking about the craft of directing, and to be in a creative and nurturing environment seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. London has felt earthquakes, we’re just not getting them in the particular area right under London.London within days, the siblings are thrown into an existential crisis that affects husbands, lovers, Mr Ford said it "puts into perspective how small this one is - we’re looking at people feeling this earthquake maybe 20 to 30 kilometres from the epicentre."

The production overlays four story strands – one for each sister and a tangential section with their I am a Designer and also a Teacher – it’s rewarding seeing ideas sketched out visualised and the performance come to life, it’s also exciting to see the progress the students are making and how they gain and grow in confidence working on such challenging productions. It’s good to get an insider’s view! But they do occur." The best thing about this course which really worked for me was the fact that in my first and second year I got to work in all kinds of departments including construction and stage management. That’s right, a bar. The Cottesloe space has been transformed into a trendy watering hole ( shown right, minus the audience) and a huge, bright orange bar top snakes across the space, surrounded by bar stools and room for audience members to stand. It's hot, it's crowded and it can get very loud. Simultaneously, the action also takes place in two proscenium spaces high up at either end of the theatre. Part of the joy of watching Earthquakes in London comes from not knowing what will happen next, or where. Spanning the years between 1968 and 2525 - yes, it's true, 2525! - the play fields a fast-moving array of characters who talk, sing, dance, jump and, on one memorable occasion, ride a bike across the bar top, while pounding music lifts the spirits and fuels the action. It feels very exciting and a tiny bit dangerous too.
