Subject requirements Teaching is provided through a mixture of lectures, practicals, projects and supervisions, and in Year 1 you can typically expect around 22 hours of teaching each week. You’re assessed each year through coursework and written exams. A major individual project occupies about half of your time. Many projects are associated with current Department research and have direct industrial input and application. Recent projects have included: All applicants for Engineering (H100) or Chemical Engineering via Engineering (H810) are required to sit the ENGAA. If you are a mature student applying to a mature college you may be invited to sit an at-interview written assessment instead of the ENGAA. In addition to the ENGAA, some colleges require applicants to sit an additional college-set written assessment at interview. Currently, these colleges are only Trinity 🔗, however the college you are applying to will let you know if this is the case. To take the ENGAA, you must be registered to take the test at an authorised admissions centre. This is normally your school or college. If you’re not able to do this, you can find an authorised test centre here 🔗, or your school/college can apply to become a test centre 🔗 by the 15th of September 2023.

However, most continue to the fourth year (Part IIB), successful completion of which leads to the BA and MEng degrees. Progression to Part IIB is dependent on achievement in Parts IB and IIA. Year 1 (Part IA) The ENGAA takes place on Wednesday 19th October. You must ensure you have registered for the test through an authorised test centre (see below) before 30th September to ensure that you are eligible. Applicants are not typically asked to submit examples of written work. Some may be asked by their College to do some reading in advance of their interview, but if this is required the College will provide full details in the letter inviting the student to interview. Which courses require the ENGAA?Coursework includes laboratory experiments and computing exercises. Several experiments are linked around the common theme of earthquake-resistant structures. A highlight of the year is the integrated design project, a design project spanning multiple engineering disciplines, where you work in teams to design and build robot vehicles which are then tested against each other. Year 3 (Part IIA) Part I (Years 1 and 2) provides a broad education in engineering fundamentals, enabling you to make a genuinely informed choice about the area in which to specialise from your third year (many students change direction as a result). Part II (Years 3 and 4) then provides in-depth training in your chosen professional discipline. Top tip: There aren’t a huge number of past papers available for the ENGAA as it is a relatively new admissions test, so if you find yourself needing more papers to practise, try using PAT past papers as well. The PAT (Physics Aptitude Test) is used by Oxford to assess applicants for Engineering among other Physics-based courses, and covers many of the same topics as the ENGAA. However, just note that the time conditions are not the same for both tests and that you should not sit the PAT to prepare for this element of the ENGAA, but rather for the content and style of questions. 4.
