About this deal

The brand began as a collaboration between French winemaker Thierry Boudinaud and British wine importer Guy Anderson that was launched as a company in 1995. [1] [2] [4] The original intention of the partnership was to sell wines produced in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France to foreign markets. [1] The story of the Gabriel Meffre Winery began in 1936, when Gabriel and his wife, both passionate about wine, created their ‘Négociant-Vinificateur’ business in Gigondas, in the heart of the Rhone Valley in Southern France.More than 80 years later, the family business has built on its strong foundations and has established its reputation as a leading Winery in the southern Rhone Valley. With a complementary know-how of ‘Négociant-Eleveur’ and Producer, the Winery is deeply involved in sustainable development and Social Responsibility (CSR).

The contrasting flavours create a harmonious interplay that elevates the dining experience.

The wine's arguably offensive name has helped to draw attention to the brand, but has also caused some problems in its marketing and distribution. Most people bought a bottle because of the name and returned to buy cases because of the quality.

Living large is not only the enjoyment of worldly luxuries but is a state of mind that every moment must be lived with a passion and boldness, understanding that time waits for no one. For the Vin de Pays d'Oc,they sourced grapes all around the Herault. Vineyards are located in the foothills of the Missif Central Pezenas, Beziers and Narbonne. For theVin de Pays Ile de Beaute, the grapes come fromall around Corsica, mostly from hillside vineyards as the island is very mountainous. The relatively high altitude of the vineyards provides the temperate conditions necessary for aroma and colour development. [4] The production run for the first vintage was only 800 cases (about ten thousand 750 ml bottles), [1] but as time passed, the brand became the largest-selling French Chardonnay in the United States. [4] In 2006, 500,000 cases (equivalent to 6 million 750 ml bottles) of the brand were sold in the U.S. market. [3]Guy was a rebel in the wine industry believing that quality was paramount in a wine but that the average consumer hated the traditional intimidation heaped on them by most of the wine industry. The two had collaborated before and this was yet another chance to drink wine, catch up on family and enjoy a few days together. After tasting hundreds of barrel samples both were pleased with the quality, but not blown away. The Advertising Standards Association of Iceland banned the mass-mailing of an advertisement circular that featured the wine on its cover and had been sent to 175,000 homes and a primary school. [7] It said that the product's name was "unsuitable to be seen by young children and should not have featured on the outside covers of the circulars" that had been "distributed to homes in an un-targeted manner". [7] Thierry, a renowned winemaker who had crafted wines from California to France, from Chile to South Africa was sitting in a cold damp wine cellar one winter day when the door burst open. It was Guy Anderson, his dear friend from London who had just arrived to sample the recent vintage. “It’s cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey!” Guy bellowed with a big smile on his face. “Now Thierry, let’s find out what gems we have this year.”
