The Sony WF-1000XM4 are beaten initially for ANC by the Galaxy product, but these and the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds can still lay claim to the being the best noise-cancelling earbuds on the market owing to their more tailored experience –although now, it's a far more closely run race. Every note sounds like the real thing because clear audio starts at the source with your favorite Samsung Galaxy device. The upgraded Samsung Seamless Codec encodes the full 24-bit audio and is decoded via Galaxy Buds2 Pro, maintaining that same 24-bit high-quality sound. Our in-house team of expert reviewers tested these earbuds over a couple of weeks, both inside our dedicated test rooms and out in the real world to test every aspect of the Buds 2 Pro, from the fit and battery life to ANC and the all-important sound quality. Support for 24-bit audio is all well and good – but playing music wirelessly is still a lossy game, especially when using Bluetooth. We need to know the data rate to make any meaningful comparison to the amount of information that is being relayed when playing 24-bit audio. Samsung has confirmed to us that the Buds 2 Pro support 24-bit/48kHz audio at a data rate of 584kbps. As a comparison, an uncompressed CD-spec data stream works at 1411kbps. Switching to answer the phone works even when you’re connected to a Samsung TV. Once the Galaxy Buds2 Pro are connected to the Samsung TV via Bluetooth, there is no need to take the earbuds out to answer the phone. Incoming calls can be answered simply by tapping the Galaxy Buds2 Pro twice.One of the biggest discrepancies between the Buds Pro and Buds 2 is their IP rating for water resistance. The Buds Pro are IPX7 rated, meaning they’re cut out for just about any situation save a swim, while the Buds 2 only offer IPX2 protection. That certifies them safe from water splashes from certain directions but won’t provide the same level of peace of mind as their pricier siblings. If you were to use them non-stop, the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 should last you about five hours with active noise cancelling turned on, and a little longer if you turn that off. Inside the case are at least another three charges for a total of 20 hours with ANC on, or 29 hours if you leave it off. Our first impressions of the earbuds are that they sound incredibly open and clear. Play Dua Lipa’s Levitating and her voice is delivered loudly and with ample detail. It sounds big and spacious, and there’s high energy to the tune that’s immediately attractive to listen to. Of course, battery life is dependent on how you use the earbuds. The above battery life is for listening time, if you use them for conversations you’re looking at only 3.5 hours with ANC on, and 13 hours with the case or 3.5 hours and 14 hours with ANC turned off.
Other settings of note include an equalizer (which made the sound quality even worse, at least for what I was listening to), an earbud fit test (I’m still batting 1.000 for those), the option to read notifications out loud, and “Seamless earbud connection,” which speeds up switching between different devices so long as they’re all signed in to your Samsung account. This is one of those things that unless you’re deep in the Samsung ecosystem, it might not matter so much. Walk away from your Galaxy Buds2 Pro and the integrated alarm is ready to let you know — and your phone will send you a notification so that you don’t accidentally leave them behind. Requires Galaxy Z Flip4, Fold4, S23 Series and newer smartphone models with One UI 5.0 or later, and must be paired with Galaxy Buds2 Pro.
