With Water: A few drops of water give this some of the sweetness that it’s yearning for, and freshens some of the fruit. It lessens the tongue burn very slightly, and adds a little vanilla frosting to the finish. Water is decidedly not a bad idea with this whisky. Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength is somewhat of an oddity in the distillery’s currentrange. It is the only one which doesn’t presently carry an age-statement (however the Internet suggests that it is at least 8 year old). Similarly to fellow cask strength sherried heavy weight Aberlour A’bunadh, as a vatting of casks there are reports of batch variance for time to time, but that’s the nature of the beast when it comes to vattings. It’s bottled at a hefty 60% ABV is naturally coloured, and although not specified, I am presuming is probably non chill-filtered. Nose: Unfilled sherry casks; damp clay tilth; red peppers; cashew nuts; currants; fudge; dark honey; vetch; pie crust; stewed strawberries; lively young spirit (don’t inhale too deeply without adding a little water). The introduction of water dials up the “low end” of the spectrum, giving more of a dried fruit impression with figs, dates, and raisins. In time, a hint of lambskin (leather) emerges.

A little water and a second sip; you can calm your own senses down and not fear of the punch in the face from this dram. Like the nose, it’s quieter with a touch of water and a bit more rounded. Less of that alcohol blast. It’s sweet, but I can’t seem to get past or shake the youthful element of this whisky. Not a lot more to add to the taste when water is added. Conclusions:The sherry really peaks through here in a way that makes me think of all the great, old, Glenfarclas I’ve enjoyed. Hazelnuts, leather, dried dark fruit, cocoa, dried orchard fruit, citrus peels, butterscotch, copper, and strawberry shortcake.
