About this deal

Written by AMANDA CONNER, JIMMY PALMIOTTI, PAUL DINI, STEPHANIE PHILLIPS, STJEPAN ŠEJIĆ, SAM HUMPHRIES, KAMI GARCIA, ROB WILLIAMS, MINDY LEE, TERRY DODSON, CECIL CASTELLUCCI, and RAFAEL SCAVONE From jovial jokester to Super-Villain, Harley Quinn has captivated the hearts of fans for three decades. RSVLTS apparel line is releasing a 30th anniversary tribute to the unpredictable Harley Quinn, which features three soft and stretchy men’s and women’s button-down shirts: “XOXO,” a love letter to Harley through the years, the subtle-yet-sinister “Jokes on You,” and “Lil Quinns,” covered in a menacing mosaic of mini-Quinn jesters. In many ways, Margot Robbie can be considered the casting that launched a thousand cosplays. In 2016, Task Force X came to the big screen for the first time in the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad…and of course, Harley Quinn was on the roster. Batman: The Animated Series paired Harley Quinn with Poison Ivy in an episode appropriately titled “Harley and Ivy.” The rest is history.

On the 11 th of September in the year 1992, fans around the world tuned in to watch Batman: The Animated Series, unaware of the history that was being made before them. The episode was called “Joker’s Favor” and it centered around the Clown Prince manipulating an average man named Charlie. When breaking the story, writer Paul Dini thought it would be fun to put a woman in the Joker’s gang, similar to the moll characters from the Adam West Batman series. The story may be called Injustice, but it brought nothing BUT justice to Harley fans hoping to see her take on a less villainous role. Was it meant to prove that Harley is a hero at heart? Because you can’t do that and have her treat death so casually at the same time. This is not writing Harley as complex or fun, it’s just writing her as a mess. Even “insane” characters need to have logic behind the writing. You can’t just have Harley react to things on whims and expect the audience to feel something for her.

Dini got the idea to cast his friend Arleen Sorkin after seeing her in a jester outfit on the soap opera Days of our Lives. It was a perfect choice. Sorkin’s vocals gave Harley the comedically anarchic personality that helped turn the character into a superstar. Cover image for 0722DC023 Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special #1 J. Scott Campbell, in stores Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from DC Comics She continuously produces cover work for Marvel Comics, DC Comics and an assortment of independent titles. There isn’t much plot to the chapter itself, it’s just Harley traveling through a circus that represents various moments of her life and relationships in a surreal fashion. It’s still not great, and I absolutely did not need another sequence praising how wonderful the Harley/Ivy romance is after what I’ve been exposed to in this comic. Still, I would probably put Mindy Lee and the Dodsons on the list of who should actually be writing Harley. It took us ten stories to find a creative team still capable of that. 8/10 The art by John Timms is wonderful, though. The action is incredibly well drawn and intense, and I appreciated the minor visual jokes like Harley stealing a bag that says “LOOT” or an Easter egg of the Joker as a homeless clown. 6/10I want to start off by saying that I appreciate the thought of pairing various writers and artists who worked on previous Harley Quinn books for this anthology. It could be seen as a trip down memory lane for some. Moreover, I do think that Chad Hardin is a good artist for this story. His character designs are colorful and expressive. I also like how letterer Dave Sharpe gave certain characters are given differently designed speech bubbles (like Red Tool) to make it all more fun. There is also an incredible array of Harley Quinn apparel, collectibles and more, including DC Shop which has curated shirts, shoes and even classic animation cels showing off thirty years of Harley Quinn. The Maid of Mischief was given an entirely new look for the video game, losing her jester outfit in favor of a red-and-blue bodice and thigh-high boots. Batman: Arkham Asylum and eventual franchise it birthed would prove to be so popular that Harley’s comics and merchandise began to take their cues from this new design, all while introducing our favorite Gotham troublemaker to a wider audience than ever before. Most exciting of all, Harley’s proven to be one of the most enduring elements of the franchise, with her most recent Arkham Universe adventure, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, due on consoles next year. Cover image for 0722DC025 Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special #1 Jerome Opena Cover, by (W) Various (A) Various (CA) Jerome Opena, in stores Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from DC Comics Excalibur and Catwoman writer Tini Howard and Captain Marvel artist Sweeney Boo are the new planned creative team for the DC Comics ongoing series Harley Quinn from March 2023 with Harley Quinn #28. This will follow February's Harley Quinn #27 by the current team of Stephanie Phillips and Matteo Lolli. It reminds me of the end of Suicide Squad 2016, when Harley resists and chooses to defeat the Enchantress and save her “friends” despite not being given any character development in that direction for the entire movie. Flipping Harley from one contradiction to the next is not complex characterization, once again, it’s just a mess. Then there’s the plot itself, which shows Harley trying to hang out with Alfred, and they have long conversations before Harley helps Alfred fight some villains. I was questioning in my head the whole time why Alfred was allowing a crazy person with a murder record to drink tea with him and caper about Wayne Manor, even if she is supposed to be reformed. But that’s another element to Palmiotti’s Harley. He changes anything from DC canon at will to fit his story. This has caused confusion over his run for years as people couldn’t figure out if it was supposed to be canon or not.
