About this deal

Generally speaking, there are three main types of hair dryers. The best hair dryer type for you will depend on the condition of your hair and how long it usually takes you to dry.

While many hair dryers come with a diffuser, we particularly rate the Shark HyperAir, which is known as the Shark Style iQ in the UK, for two reasons. First the diffuser it ships with has extendable prongs, so the roots as well as the ends of curly hair, can be dried evenly - this helps reduce the risk of heat damage to the hair. The Nanoe also has an innovative alternating hot and cold mode, which blasts hot air along the hair shaft to flatten and style, followed automatically by cool air to seal the cuticle and set the style. A scalp mode gently dries the roots and scalp at 50˚C, and is particularly good for dry and sensitive scalps. The dryer is lightweight and has a foldable handle, making it neat to store at home and perfect for travel. Designed by ghd's leading engineers, physicists and styling professionals, the ghd helios™ provides a salon-worthy blow dry with 30% more shine* and 3x more hair alignment*. Unique Aeroprecis™ technology combines four advanced internal aerodynamic elements to deliver a precise and ultra-powerful 120kmh airflow. The highly concentrated airflow is channelled through a precision contoured nozzle to work in combination with ionic technology, to reduce frizz and flyaways. The Helios also impresses with its sleek, lightweight design. Weighing just 510g, it’s 20% lighter than its predecessor, the GHD Air, and is designed for comfortable, balanced handling. This user-friendly aspect is complemented by its four chic two-tone colourways, adding a touch of elegance to your styling routine.

It’s up there as one of our favourites – but GHD’s rivals have been hot on its heels in recent years. Many high-end hair dryers come with a gamut of fancy features that claim to boost results. The BaByliss 3Q, however, takes the basic features of hair dryers and absolutely nails them, giving you an effortless and fuss-free barnet without overcomplicating things. It has three control switches for speed, temperature, and a cool shot, plus two concentrator nozzles to deliver a good amount of control when blow-drying your hair. However, leaving your hair to dry naturally isn't an option for many of us. With that in mind, if you are planning on using a hair dryer, apply a heat protection styling spray before blow drying, and keep the heat level to a medium, to reduce the amount of damage a hair dryer causes to your hair. How we tested these hair dryers As well as three heat and two speed options, there’s a cool shot and a booster button that ramps up the airflow for fast rough drying. We did find this makes the dryer noisier, but not to the extent that we felt the need to apologise to our neighbours. It comes with two styling nozzles and one diffuser – generous considering the price –and yielded a nice daily blow-dry in as much time as you would expect from any dryer.

Subsequently, a large part of the development of Helios went into its so-called AeroPrecis technology. When it comes to buying the best hair dryer for you, there are a number of features you should consider starting with three different types of heating element, which warm the air before its projected from the barrel, used in modern hair dryers. Metal elements ensure the hair dryer is more affordable but will cause more heat damage, while ceramic elements ensure the heat is more evenly distributed to diminish the damage. Finally, tourmaline elements release negative ions in the air flow, which speeds up evaporation of the water molecules reducing drying time but also make hair appear smoother. The Dyson may have been the reigning champion of the hair dryer world for four years now, but ghd is the first competitor worthy of the title. The sacrifice you make for the GHD Helios’ increased speed, it seems, is in volume and bounce. Something that not a single dryer has been able to match when compared to the Revlon 2-in-1 Having owned, and used, a GHD Air for at least five years we can categorically say that the GHD Helios is noticeably lighter from the first use. You can instantly tell it’s quieter, too, and its extra power becomes immediately clear as soon as you start using itOn the subject of styling, the lighter weight of the Helios as it moves around the head during a blowdry is welcomed and we thought the GHD Air was well-balanced until we used the GHD Helios. Most stylists would recommend a wattage of at least 2000W to thoroughly dry your lengths, although the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is the exception with just 1,600W – but the clever digital motor technology still ensures a powerful dry. The Revlon Pro Collection One Step Dryer & Volumiser is a slight wildcard in this list of best hair dryers because it’s classed as a 2-in-1 styler and dryer. If you don’t have the time, patience, or skill to fully blow-dry your hair with barrel brushes, the Revlon combines the two. It’s effectively a large brush with air vents below the bristles and two heat settings, plus a cold shot. As you move the brush through your hair, it dries and styles at the same time. This gave our fine hair a decent shine and levels of volume we typically only get from a professional blow-dry. Despite the smaller number of settings, it’s the drying power that sets the Helios apart from the rest: the 2,200W motor rivals the Dyson Supersonic in its drying time and ability to deliver a frizz-free finish, which is no easy feat for a hair dryer that costs half the price. That’s thanks to GHD’s AutoPrecis technology creating a blast of focused air that travels at 75mph, as well as the concentrator nozzle that precisely directs airflow for a smooth blow dry.
