About this deal

However, it's important to also remember that there's no way these are actually random. For one, he spends very little time in the US beyond NYC, nothing rural, and I suspect that other countries are represented in this sort of proportion, too. For another, he was only able to talk to people who were willing to talk to him. For yet another, he was only able to approach people who were out-of-doors, and there are lots of people who don't spend any time outside hanging out. Of a young couple in love: “They were happy with how this photo came out, if the shrieking was any indication”. Why The Humans Of New York Refugee Coverage Is Such a Punch In The Gut". Yahoo!. September 29, 2015 . Retrieved November 17, 2015. The blog has steadily grown, now boasting millions of devoted followers. Humans of New York is the book inspired by the blog. With four hundred color photos, including exclusive portraits and all-new stories, Humans of New York is a stunning collection of images that showcases the outsized personalities of New York.

Firstly, Stanton is not a great photographer. He admits as much in the introduction. He takes GOOD to AVERAGE photgraphs of very interesting people and scenes. So as I made my way through the book, I felt sort of cheated. I kept waiting for a "whoa" inspiration and instead felt lots of "hmmms." For a person who mines the biographies of others for significant buried details, Stanton is notably ineloquent about his own childhood. It was “good,” he told me. “It was nuclear. And there was structure.” His parents divorced when he was a baby — his father struggled with drug addiction — and his mother soon remarried. Stanton’s stepfather, whom he calls Dad, was a stable presence in his life. (As an adult, Stanton reconciled with his biological father, who had gotten clean.) I loved reading Humans of New York and I loved reading this book Humans. The stories Stanton shares cuts through all the ways people are often portrayed, the exaggerations and the overlooked, the hyped and the ignored. It reminds me of the time I spent working for the government, interviewing people in my county and in surrounding counties. I remember thinking, others need to do this, too, see what people are really like, not the ways they are portrayed in the news, on tv, in movies, on social media, and in books. And that is what Stanton has done. An older couple, one with light skin, one with dark. “He does absolutely everything for me. I’m completely spoiled” “I used to be a butcher she used to come into my store. Every week I would set apart the best piece of meat for her. And look how it turned out – I ended up with the best piece of meat of them all.” Photographs record moments in time that otherwise would be lost forever. Nothing portrays the personality of an individual as their photograph. In this collection Brandon Stanton set out to capture through his lens the people he calls ”The Humans of New York”. He captions each photograph with a story, either his own or that of the person in the photo.

Humans of New York': Photo Gone Viral". Video– ABC News. October 11, 2013 . Retrieved October 25, 2013.

This book is based on the premise of the author’s blog, which being anti-social media I didn’t realise, and I guess, most people are aware of the blog and not the book. One thing that he claims is 'randomness.' I understand the point of the essay in which he claims that, because he's contrasting his efforts to talk to ordinary ppl with most media's efforts to find the most dramatic or exciting image. He's right to point out that most media misleads, because most people are relatively happy or content most of the time... many Pakistanis have thanked him for showing the good side of their country. In December 2012, Stanton spent two weeks collecting street portraits in Iran. Following the Boston Marathon bombing, Stanton spent the week collecting street portraits in Boston, Massachusetts. During the 2014 SXSW conference, he spent a week in Austin, Texas, where the conference is held, to gather portraits of Texans. Fans of the Humans of New York blog & books will need no encouragement, this is more of the same but from all around the world. A great big coffee table book. If I owned it and had a coffee table I'd dip into it every so often and it'd take years to get through. But as a library book I (have to)(get to) read it through in a timely manner. Some of these stories are joyful, some are deeply sad, but still others remind us to think about the long haul. The great thing about New York is that if you sit in one place long enough, the whole world comes to you.

So when we had a chance to own a 'real' book which we could then show to others and share the experience still further - of course we ALL wanted that book. I've sort of had an arrogant demeanor my entire life, and I'm learning that I'm going to have to change that if I want to succeed. I realized that it doesn't matter how clever you are if nobody wants to work with you." Brandon Stanton the author, developed his talent for photography in an unusual and pressured way. He had been working in the financial markets of Chicago as a bond salesman and received a camera a gift. The gift allowed Stanton to begin taking pictures of buildings and places in Chicago as a hobby and then to branch gradually into photographing people.. When he lost his job, Stanton decided to make a career change. He began to move from city to city, including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, taking photos with his interest moving to photographing people. Stanton became fascinated with New York City and its opportunities, moved to the City, and began to photograph in earnest. He soon received widespread recognition on media which translated into this book. Thus, Stanton’s photos of a city and its people reinventing themselves parallel s his own reinvention of himself and his path in life.Lamothe, Dan (August 21, 2016). "Humans of New York decided to profile veterans. The response has been overwhelming". Washington Post . Retrieved January 11, 2019. We still want to push the juice,” Mohammed said cautiously. They were about to clinch a deal with a new manufacturer capable of producing 100,000 bottles of juice a day.

Of course, as a result it was pretty heard trying to figure out which pictures to feature, but I managed to narrow it down (out my 80+ pictures):

Seems to me, we don't get the pleasure of seeing books like these often. I must be outrageously expensive to print. I hope those who can afford it --BUY it ....(its beautiful) --- When we get in trouble, she doesn't suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter." In association with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Stanton went to Europe in 2015 to capture migrants and refugees seeking asylum in Europe from their homelands, most of which are war zones. [6] This resulted in much support, donations, and awareness of the European migrant crisis. [17] Stanton stated in a BBC interview that he had to use a new type of interviewing style for these subjects, because he did not think it pertinent to ask about their past or future. [18]
