Well, when you do these costumes, each one is your children, and they all present their own problems and issues. Perhaps the biggest problem — even bigger than dealing with visual effects — was the weather where we were shooting [in North Carolina]. It was 90, more like 100 degrees, and 100 percent humidity.

For her piece worn to The Hunger Games, I wanted to show a bit of fraying by sewing the seams on the outside. It looks like she’s maintaining it. She’s repurposing pieces because she is talented and is a designer in her own right. Tigris is able to keep the family looking presentable when they’re really struggling inside. There is a bit of discoloration to her look. It’s faded. So we airbrushed all the edges and airbrushed a darker fuchsia tone along the seams. It was a very subtle process, and the team did such a beautiful, beautiful job. I tried to keep her in a happier tone because she is trying to remain hopeful, and she’s always optimistic. But also, she is terrified of what’s happening in the world and like you said, her clothing is her armor. It’s how she can protect herself and then present something that’s not really happening internally for her. Her costumes were really important. Illustration by Gloria Kim – Courtesy of Lionsgate From handcrafted designs to pieces by Alexander McQueen, Nicholas K, Tex Saverio and Juun J, the new Hunger Games film is an eye-popping fashion fantasy. The Hollywood Blog caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville to talk about the fashions she chose for Katniss, Peeta, and the competitors in the arena—plus, how she handled author Suzanne Collins’s frequent impulse to have characters appear nearly naked. Spencer Williams: Oh, okay! I need to get in on this immediately! Congratulations Trish on this collaboration and this incredible new film – The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes . I’m so excited for everyone to see it. Thank you so much for joining me. I’m so glad we finally got to do a formal interview. Well, one of the great liberties that we did have is, in the world of Panem, in the Capitol, fashion is constantly changing. So we didn’t really have to stay literally tied to a lot of things. After the first film, we got to change with trends and fashion, like in the real world, but at a different pace in the Capitol. For the tulle skirt, I was figuring out what I could do to show a rainbow that would also work functionally because she has to do so many stunts and actions in this costume. She’s in this dress for a very, very long time. One of the things that Francis and I talk about—and we talked with Elizabeth about it—is that Effie is in a really tough position. She lived this Capitol life, but she starts to realize how damaging this all is. She looks happy, and she’s very Capitol, and she’s vibrant and she’s colorful—but she’s always uncomfortable. Trish Summerville: Having Tigris to dress was great. And then when it’s Hunter Schafer being cast in this role, you get the double win-win. Spencer Williams: Likewise! I’m so excited to be here with you and to talk about the costumes for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It’s such an exciting film. I LOVED it. The male tribute and Foxface wore costumes that reflected light and shone whenever the tributes turned around. The glittering, eye-catching silver represents the color of wires and other power-like items. Their costumes represented a solar panel. [1] District 6 - Transportation [ ]

The District 10 male and female tributes had costumes that were glitzed up in golden fringe, and meant to represent cowboys and cowgirls from their district. [1] Kurt:"I think so. Bart always references private school where you have all the same thing and people do little things to make themselves stand out, whether they are doing it intentionally or not. It can be subtle. When Katniss first meets President Coin it's important for them to be on the same level ground - they are wearing the same thing. But Katniss is a little more unbuttoned while Coin's top button is done up. It's those subtle differences which help define characters." Bart:"That was the most interesting thing for us. These characters had been really established and to strip them down and break them from society was great for us. It was also interesting to think how we would create something for these characters' styles to come out of, even though they're in the same clothing. Eiffe is the best example of that. Each character took the same base clothing and made it their own." Was it important to show their personality coming through?

Spencer Williams: You and your team really got to set a whole different tone. As you said, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place many years before the story many of us became familiar with. The Capitol is still very sophisticated and beautiful, but there is an eeriness to it. To me, it felt as though we were watching a beautiful period piece set in the world of Panem.
