LP 2 Double-Edged Sword (Steven Wilson mixes of additional Broadsword recordings March 1981 to January 1982) Paul Samwell-Smith produced the album, making The Broadsword and the Beast the first and only Jethro Tull album produced by an external producer outside of the band and their management. Early sessions for the album were produced by Keith Olsen, however Olsen was dismissed amid creative differences in December 1981 and did not receive a credit on the album. [3] The album was the first Jethro Tull album to feature Peter-John Vettese on keyboards and Gerry Conway on drums. You know, I'd be happy if they recorded drums with a human in the seat, but it's not a priority for me. I'd take the album as is, with a glorious Surround Mix quite happily. Of course, having learned Anderson himself is okay with the drums being changed, means any debate about original intent is mute. I've loved this album since release, and while the drums are obviously electronic, it's the only way I've ever known it. As I've stated before, I think the writing is brilliant on this record. Beastie,” which opens the record and was originally considered as the album’s title, instantly sets the tone for what’s to come. The melancholic yet catchy “Fallen On Hard Times” features a soothing, haunting acoustic guitar alongside calculating flute and keyboard work to leave a lasting impression. It remains the album’s only single to scrape the Top 20 charts. According to the liner notes, “Slow Marching Band” seems to be a favorite among the players, though “Broadsword” asserts its presence with far more resonance. “Pussy Willow” provides an ethereal interlude, while the bouncing synths and off-beat rhythm give “Watching Me, Watching You” a very 80s feel.

Jethro Tull’s 1982 album The Broadsword and the Beast will be reissued in September as hefty vinyl and CD box sets. I'd take slightly lesser Tull every day of the week. Jethro Tull is still hard at work making new music. The Ian Anderson-fronted outfit releasedits 23rd album, RokFlote, in April.
