About this deal

Drinking neat, for me, the nose is gentle and subtle, less forward than BT. A bit more 'spirit-y' than I'm used to. Vanilla, ripe melon and a little smoke. Rich, savory dishes: BBQ ribs, smoked brisket, or a juicy burger can emphasize the robust flavors in this bourbon. Chocolate: Dark chocolate, in particular, can accentuate the caramel and vanilla notes, making for a delicious dessert pairing.

Jim Beam has been a staple in the bourbon world for years, and for many, it’s likely one of the first whiskeys they’ve ever tried. With their new Single Barrel Bourbon 108 Proof, it seems they’re raising the bar, offering a bourbon with more complexity and depth. The decision to forego filtering and increase the proof to 108 suggests a commitment to delivering a richer, more robust experience for whiskey lovers.Share With: You can’t go wrong sharing this one with a fan of Jim Beam. I really think longtime fans are gonna love this one. It’s different from what they’re used to but still has many of the familia traits associated with Jim Beam – most noticeably the strong corn flavor that I associated with Jim Beam.

As a whiskey enthusiast, I’ve always been on the lookout for new and interesting offerings in the world of bourbon. Recently, Jim Beam released their Single Barrel Bourbon at a higher proof of 108 and caught my attention. Intrigued by the promise of a bolder taste, I decided to dive in and explore this new addition to the Jim Beam family. Wow, this is thin on the nose already. There are hints of vanilla, overcooked popcorn, caramel, and what feels like fresh slices of Wonder Bread. The sip is almost invisible on the tip of the tongue and very watery but does have echoes of sweet cherry candy, caramel apples, and vanilla extract in there. Those notes almost immediately disappear into the watery nature of the sip with no discernable finish. Taste 5 Zach Johnston Some of you refer to this as the “finish” but let’s be honest. Don’t we all just want to know if it burns good? Jim Beam is a fairly expansive brand, ranging in proof, age, whiskey types, and even released in a variety of flavors (though once flavor is added it’s no longer considered bourbon). Jim Beam Bourbon is the flagship brand, though it shares a mashbill with other Beam bourbons including Knob Creek, Baker’s, and Booker’s. Unlike the latter three, however, Jim Beam generally seems to cater less to the bourbon enthusiast crowd. Despite this, Jim Beam Single Barrel is offered as a standalone bottling as well as a private selection option, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to discover something a little more special. This particular barrel was selected by CrossRoads Wine & Spirits located in the small city of Bryant, Arkansas. It comes in at the standard 95 proof and is from barrel JB7079.For Old Fashioned: Stir 2 oz bourbon, 1/2 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters with ice, then strain over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange twist and cherry. Nuts: Toasted or candied pecans, almonds, or walnuts can highlight the nutty, oaky character of this Jim Beam Single Barrel offering. There’s more than enough people putting forth their opinions on the deal so I won’t burden you with another long opinion piece. But let me say that the Japanese hold whiskey in very high regard. I lived in Japan for a few years (unfortunately before I fell in love with whiskey) and they really, really love drinking whiskey. I think it’s safe to say that Suntory will do a great job of leading Beam and building upon their long history and respected product line. And don’t forget, Four Roses is already owned by Kirin, a Japanese company. There’s nothing to fear in the deal as long as supply meets demand. And to that point, I believe Jim Beam’s first-ever single barrel bourbon is going to put that to the test in 2014 and beyond. This high-rye whiskey is aged for at least four years. The bonded barrels are then vatted according to the Old Grand-Dad flavor profile and bottled at 50 percent, which lets a bit more of the juice shine in the bottle. Our master distiller carefully selects each barrel by hand – less than one percent are chosen for Jim Beam® Single Barrel – ensuring the highest quality. No two barrels are the same, and each is individually bottled, labeled and hand-numbered.

For this blind tasting, I’m focusing on those eight bourbons— no rye whiskeys or Little Book (a blended straight whiskey) today — to see which one really stands out as the ultimate Beam bourbon brand. I’m keeping bottles as close to similar as possible — that is I’m not pulling a wild single barrel limited edition Jim Beam you can’t find and pretending that’s going to be comparable to Old Crow or Old Grand-Dad. The lineup today is all pretty standard bottles of Beam’s bourbons that you should be able to find and taste for yourself. To enhance your palate and overall experience with Jim Beam Single Barrel 108 Proof, here are some food pairings that complement the whiskey: Peanuts, corn, vanilla, oak, toffee, nutmeg and biscuity with bits of sourdough bread, waxy citrus peels, mint and fruit.
