About this deal

In Buchan's book, the driving force behind the challenge was the feeling of ennui suffered by the three would be poachers. In Greig's novel, there are slightly different motives behind the prank. Neil has been burdened by grief following the sudden death of his wife four years earlier; Alasdair is driven by misdirected rage arising from his failing relationship with his wife; Murray wants to strike a blow for the rights of the common man, and to puncture the hegemony of absentee landowners over much of the land in the Highlands. The mainsprings are captive on guide rods to provide direct power to the hammers but they have a rebounding effect so striker drag is eliminated once the gun is opened after firing.

Retrieved 28 April 2013. The Highlander Deluxe is the machine engraved version of this duo, which lowers the price considerably, but does not detract from the looks of the gun. The trigger is adjustable in the fore-and-aft plane, and it also has a small screw for the adjustment of the poundage – a feature best set up by a gunsmith. Top and side ribs are ventilated for lightness and good heat dissipation, and the top rib is machined with a glare-reducing crescent pattern. Rhodes, Michael. JOHN MACNAB 20 Gauge HAMMER EJECTOR

Stewart, David of Garth (1822). Sketches of the character, manners, and present state of the Highlanders of Scotland: with details of the military service of the Highland regiments. Edinburgh and London: A. Constable and Longman, Hurst. p. 370. It is a sporter which, at a pinch, could also serve as a field-shooting gun as long as not too much walking was involved. It would be OK in a pigeon hide, and 3in chambers add to its adaptability, although its proof does not allow the use of very heavy steel loads. Following Buchan's original, the three issue challenges to a selection of Highland landowners signed in the cognomen 'John Macnab' undertaking to bag a salmon, brace of grouse and a stag respectively. The three estates to which the challenges are issued are, however, rather different from those in Buchan's novel: the first is owned by a Moroccan prince, the second by a consortium of billionaires headed by a Dutch merchant banker, while the third is the royal estate of Balmoral.

The design of the guns follow tried and tested principles with the hammers being hinged from the bottom of the action while the sears are suspended from above. As in Andrew Greig’s Electric Brae, there are a few caustic observations on the state of the author’s nation. Describing the dated decor of the local hostelry, he observes on a wall “another stag’s head, absurd and so familiar, its stilled cry something else about his country that was true.” There is also plenty good stuff on the archaic reality of land ownership in Scotland and the struggle for access rights. All is delivered, though, not in a hectoring, pompously self-righteous tone but rather with a quiet, understated passion. The strikers are substantial and work through the top lever spindle which, by the way, has a hold over button that protrudes from the top of the action face when the gun is open.Svarvari was one of five Americans who ventured to Scotland this season (a feat in itself with all the travel restrictions to navigate), their hearts set on completing the devilishly difficult Classic Macnab. “As we walked down [the hill after completing it], I was in utter wonderment, in a daze as to the day’s events. To complete a Macnab successfully with what was my first Atlantic salmon, my first brace of grouse and first stag, I would venture to say is the crowning achievement in my sporting career, one that most likely will not be surpassed,” he says. From John Macnab Ltd., Unit 6, Cropper Row, Haigh Industrial Estate, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. Tel: 01989-763859. Castle Macnab (2018) by Robert J Harris re-unites the "Macnabs", along with Richard Hannay, in a new adventure a year after the events of the original book. If the gun is being used on high birds where the smoother handling of a slightly heavier gun is preferable then buyers will appreciate the balance of the Highlanders. His contention is that his great-great-uncle was the inspiration for John Macnab, the John Buchan novel about poaching that has spawned the eponymous modern phenomenon. Kirsty - taking on and developing the journalist role played in the original by Crossby - is an excellent and very intriguing character. Her relationship with Neil, and Neil’s struggle to move on from the death of his wife, has the stamp of authenticity. Lamancha's job of taking a stag in the Haripol Forest appears impossible when the journalists get wind of the John Macnab story, and crowd into the area. Claybody's son, Johnson, has also herded all the deer into the estate's sanctuary, and has surrounded it with a cordon of navvies. But with the help of a sympathetic journalist, Crossby, and a variety of feints, Lamancha succeeds in killing and extracting from the forest 'the auld hero', a famous stag.

McNab, John (1907). The Clan MacNab; a short sketch. Edinburgh: The Clan Macnab Association. pp. 7-8 . Retrieved 8 September 2019. The 30in multichoke version weighs 8lb – a weight which provides a controlled, steady swing. The 32in version will be a touch heavier. Keen to enter The Field’s Macnab Challenge next season? The author creates a fine climax, with a real sense of drama and danger of death (although the gravity of the danger jarred with the jesting tenor of the rest). And the cameo appearance of Prince Charles is amusing.
