You’ve probably seen Spencer’s knife pimping skills on the blog before, and he’s no less skilled when it comes to making Kydex sheaths. The process really isn’t too challenging, so don’t be intimidated by the directions you see below. It might take a few words to explain everything, but I watched Spencer make a Kydex sheath from start to finish, and it’s really not as complicated as I thought it was going to be.

You could also use rivets, but eyelets look better.I wouldn’t say that Kydex is better than leather. However, it is a lot cheaper and easier to make a sheath with. It’s so cheap and easy, anyone can make their own Kydex sheath. Customers have found success creating their own vacuum tables by attaching an aluminum pan with drilled holes to a piece of plywood. A hole is in cut into the plywood to allow a shop vacuum to be inserted. The bottom of the pan (now facing upward) creates a surface the mold is placed on. The vacuum pressure will pull heated Kydex® over and around the placed mold or object.

While the Kydex is still hot, place it in your Kydex press (or makeshift press). Sandwich your knife in between the two hot pieces of Kydex and press! This will morph the flat sheets into the shape of the knife. When using rivets, control the tightness of the rivets in both diameter and length to minimize stress concentrations. Flat washers can be used to further reduce stress concentrations at rivet locations. KYDEX® sheet is tougher and more durable than fiberglass. It also has superior aesthetic characteristics when compared with fiberglass. KYDEX® sheet offers the additional benefits of being thermoformable which is a much less labor intensive process than hand layup used for fabricating fiberglass, and being recyclable, which fiberglass is not. Then, put all of the rivets in using a rivet setter if you’ve got one, or a hammer. Now you’re done! If you have an oven toaster, you can also use this. Place your Kydex sheets in at 250 degrees for ten minutes. After that, it should be floppy. If not, leave it in there longer.
