About this deal

This is an incredibly simple but tasty way to get to know a new bottle of aquavit. I enjoy it best with Ahus Akvavit. Get the recipe here.

California and Minnesota each have several producers and brands; and Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have joined the states that produce the beverage ( Sons of Norway) Throughout the 16th Century, distilled grain spirits grew in popularity and it became common to infuse the alcohol with herbs and spices. However, vodka presents itself as a much more neutral substitute. Although we have been careful only to say it once, vodka is essentially an unflavoured akvavit. Therefore, it’s the perfect choice is you’re looking for something that’s much less invasive. Akvavit or aquavit ( / ˈ ɑː k w ə v iː t, - v ə-/; also akevitt in Norwegian; aquavit in English) is a distilled spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. [1] Akvavit is distilled from grain or potatoes, and is flavoured with a variety of herbs. It is also popular in Northern Germany. [2] The family sat on the story until Catharina’s nephew, Jørgen B Lysholm, who had studied chemistry in Berlin and understood distillation, turned it into a brand. After experimenting with voyages to other far‐ flung destinations, including Brazil, he launched Linie aquavit in 1821. The word ‘Linie’ or ‘line’ refers to the equator, which under Lysholm’s rules must be crossed twice during maturation. That is still adhered to today, though the time at sea is now around four months. The recipe has remained unchanged, and includes caraway seeds, star anise and various other secret spices, and for at least 100 years it has been matured in oloroso Sherry casks.

The Granddaddy of Danish snaps, Aalborg’s table aquavit is arguably the best-known snaps in Denmark. You can even make your own infused spirit with their Aalborg Basis Snaps. It’s a neutral grain aquavit and it’s perfect for steeping your favorite fruits and herbs at home. It gave my martini’s what i’d call a “Nordic complexity” the taste would be subtle on the palette but pronounced on the aroma. Aquavit Collins Fun Norwegian snaps fact: Christopher Hammer is considered to be the father of Norwegian akevitt for his books on how to store potatoes and distill the spirit from their mash. Ironically, Farmer Hammer was a self-proclaimed avholdsmann, or “abstainer,” meaning that he didn’t drink alcohol. The identities of these different akvavit varieties are very much reflected by the country’s varying climate and topology as well as the ingredients that were historically available. After the distillation process, it is flavoured with herbs and spices, in the same way that gin is flavoured with juniper. Common additions are caraway, dill, cardamom, cumin, anise, fennel, and lemon or orange peel. Photo by Allagash Brewing (CC 2.0) I used to work managing the bar at a Scandinavian restaurant and bar here in Manchester. That’s where I got my first taste of aquavit. Prior to that, i had heard of aquavit and even had a little taste. But i didn’t really drink it or learn about it. Till my Fika days that is (Fika was the name of the Scandinavian restaurant and bar i managed). In all cases, the word derives from the Latin “Aqua Vitae”, which means “water of life”. This has roots that are very similar to the Gaelic “Uisce Beatha” as well as the French “eau de vie”.
