About this deal

Kuzniar certainly has a talent for creating truly magical situations, and her imagination knows no bounds. Everything in Everwood is saccharine sweet, which is lovely to look at but a little too much when you approach too close. The beauty of the structures and surroundings has an elegance and appeal to it, yet there are also small elements of darkness and overindulgence. I was captivated by this world and am grateful that the author allowed us to spend so much time in it, though I do wish there had been a bit more time spent outside of Marietta's frozen sugar palace.

With a belated start, Marietta realised she was being drawn into the conversation. ‘I shall not be auditioning,’ she said with a smile as pinched as her mood. ‘My family have quite forbidden it.’ It had long been ordained that she was to relinquish her dancing and be married at the age of twenty-one, which she would turn on the eve of the new year. Victoria pursed her lips. ‘Why can you not perform both? I’m a society woman and I’m not about to let a few old-fashioned-minded relics dictate what I can and cannot do with my life.’ In this intriguing new world, Marietta discovers secrets hidden within the depths of the frozen sugar palace. The ballerina needs to find her way home before Everwood captures her in its bewitching grip forever. The beginning of the story was also promising. It took place in 1906. Marietta Stelle was dreaming of becoming a dancer but unfortunately her plans were derailed by her parents’ intension to force her marry with the sinister toy maker next door called Dr. Drosselmeier. She feels in her guts that was something wrong with the man which was absolutely true!Well, I heard that he has never married but has returned to England to secure an advantageous match. Apparently the doctor possesses a grand fortune.’ The writing in this book reminded me of the classics I have loved. However, if you struggle with/do not enjoy classics you might find the writing difficult. Additionally, there are a lot of ballet terms which could get overwhelming if this is not your thing. Unfortunately it did get a little repetitive for me in the middle, and I didn’t feel the same urge to keep reading that I had felt to begin with. Nevertheless I still really enjoyed this story and really want to go and see a ballet now! I loved the female friendship in this and seeing Marietta come into her own. I also really liked her developing romance with Captain Legat and how sweet this was. When Marietta returned from rehearsal, she was greeted by the tittle-tattle emanating from her mother’s private drawing room during afternoon tea with her closest circle of confidantes and fellow traders in gossip. Her ballet mistress glided into the studio, her spine as straight and unyielding as the starched collars returned from the Stelle launderer, despite the antique silver-plated cane she used. Olga Belinskaya had been born in St Petersburg in the early nineteenth century and was a former Imperial ballerina at the Maryinsky Theatre. She oozed glamour and refinement in a pastel chiffon gown, each step, each movement considered and elegant. Few lines dared creep across her classic Slavic features, her green eyes sharp and framed with false eyelashes, her silver hair pinned in a bun, shrouded by an emerald silk scarf.

Baśniowy, tajemniczy i mroczny retelling dla dorosłych jednej z najbardziej świątecznych i magicznych opowieści na świecie, czyli „Dziadka do Orzechów” E.T.A. Hoffmanna. Theodore set his sherry glass down harder than was warranted. A few drops bloodied the ivory tablecloth. He harrumphed, the tips of his ears pinkening. You have discovered the delights of Everwood, of course. A land of ice and sugar, enchanted beyond measure. From which door did you seek entry?”In a retelling, how did you decide what to take from the source and what to entirely make your own? What a disappointing book. Seriously, I can’t recall the last time I’ve had such a hard time finishing a book. Basically, I forced myself to read it because this had been on my TBR for years and I kept expecting it to get better. It doesn’t. The author lives in Nottingham (where the novel is set) and is a huge lover of ballet. Her local knowledge and passion for dance clearly shines through in her writing. There are a lot of technical ballet terms that I wasn’t familiar with but I don’t think you needed to know the exact movements to appreciate Marietta’s love for ballet.
