Description

The MiniRig 3 is just one of the many speaker options available today, but with its 100 hours of battery life, it’s become a must-have for many festivals and weekend events. Just a single speaker will be more than enough to really get people gathering together in an open space, or even encourage some complaints from the neighbors. For most professionals, the incredible battery life of the MiniRig 3 is likely to be one of the most exciting features.

MiniRig is one of the best-known brands on the market for customers in search of a compact, powerful speaker tech. I don't tend to cover Bluetooth speakers here at Audiophile On, but companies send a lot to our offices. By that, I mean a lot of very average or outright crappy Bluetooth speakers. I won't bother covering them most of the time as nothing about them really stands out. When we decide to write about one, it means that we think highly enough for us to recommend it to our readers.

In fact our existing Minirig has even survived a few rain showers and the new Minirig is specifically IPX4 rated for resistance to splashing water – Minirigs also claims it has an “air tight enclosure”. It won’t survive a trip to the bottom of a pool, but the general abuse you’d expect from a camping trip or being left at the bottom of the garden is something it will brush aside. There is no volume button on the device, but they have two power settings that will instantly give more loudness and increase the fullness of the sound. You can switch between these modes via a single power button press.

Unfortunately, I have not tested or reviewed the Minirigs speakers with the addition of the, but I would look to doing this in the future. Stand-alone, the Minirigs speaker, has a lot of basses, so I’m not sure without testing whether it would be too much bass with a subunit or make it sound even more impressive. The Aesthetic is straightforward and industrial-looking. I like it, and it is available in several different colors for you to choose from. It's a case of them trying to build the most compact and best-sounding speaker and then trying to make a housing around that that is exceptionally robust while adding minimal bulk to the design. The appearance and durability of the MiniRig 3 portable are among the first things you’ll notice when evaluating this speaker. The hand-assembled devices come with ruggedized grills for internal protection and fantastic anodized aluminum bodies. While there is no dust or waterproofing, Minirig says the Mini is “splashproof.” It’s a bummer the Mini isn’t waterproof as it would have been the ultimate travel speaker that you can use in the hotel or bring to the beach. Performance As mentioned above, Bluetooth on the MiniRig 3 isn’t as great as it could be. Although this functionality works around 95% of the time, you will occasionally have issues with dropped connections, which is the last thing you need if you’re a professional playing a show. However, at the louder levels, the low frequencies do begin to dwindle. MiniRig 3 Review: Pros and Cons
