Minoxidil works as a vasodilator, meaning that it expands blood vessels to encourage greater blood flow to the area on which it’s applied. Given that male pattern baldness (or MPB) is caused by the miniaturisation (the shrinkage and weakening) of hair follicles on your scalp, this process is handy. With more blood comes more nutrients and oxygen, which encourages the health of those follicles and ultimately reverses the shrinkage. Regaine® preparations contain an alcohol which may be irritating to sensitive areas of skin. Be careful not to get any of the preparation into your eyes or mouth, or on to any broken areas of skin or cuts. If this does happen, wash the area well with water.

Minoxidil is not effective for everyone. If you feel there is no improvement after 12 months of using the solution, you should stop using it. If you are using minoxidil foam, you should stop using it after 24 weeks if there is no improvement.

What is a natural alternative to minoxidil?

For some men, this normal ageing process can be distressing, particularly if it is excessive or occurs early in life. Treatment with a minoxidil preparation rubbed into the scalp may help prevent further hair loss in some men. It is not clear how it works and benefit from the treatment is only maintained for as long as the preparation is used. Regaine the branded version of minoxidil has only been tested and approved for use on your scalp. There’s little evidence that it works to grow beard hair. Minoxidil is designed to be used twice daily, ideally at twelve-hour intervals.
