About this deal

MGM bought the film rights and announced Stewart Granger as the star immediately. William Wright was originally going to produce. [6] Moonfleet is considered to be a classic work of fiction, and continues to be published in series such as Dover Children's Evergreen Classics. Houseman later said, "It ended up being rather a crazy type of picture – still much admired by European filmmakers – but, commercially, it was a disaster." [8]

THOMAS M. PRYOR (Oct 11, 1953). "HOLLYWOOD DIGEST: Spectacles of Silent Era Eyed as Wide Screen Fare -- M-G-M Slate -- Addenda". New York Times. p.X5. Falkner uses the local geography of Dorset and the Isle of Wight in the book, only changing some of the place names. The village of Moonfleet is based on East Fleet in Dorset by Chesil Beach. The headland in the book called The Snout is Portland Bill. And more than once I have stood rope in hand in that same awful place, and tried to save a struggling wretch; but never saw one come through the surf alive, in such a night as he saved me.” – David Stuart Davies looks at a classic adventure story. The Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air released a 300-minute production of the book in May 2009, starring Jerry Robbins, David Ault, and Rob Cattell. It was dramatised by Deniz Cordell, and produced by M. J. Cogburn.

Maybe the twists and turns in the second half are overdone and far-fetched but it spoils nothing of the fun of taking part in this marvelous treasure hunt!

Ich stehe auf Abenteuerromane und auf Texte, in denen das Meer immer wieder präsent ist. Kein Wunder also, dass mich der Umschlagtext von Falkners Moonfleet sofort angesprochen hat. John arrives where he originally started, in the Why Not?, and is reunited with Ratsey. He is also reunited with Grace. She is now a rich young lady, having inherited her father's money. However, she is still in love with John. John tells her about the diamond and his life in prison. He regrets having lost everything, but she says, rich or not, she loves him.The language is a little outdated but, in spite of that, the novel, first published in 1898, is perfect to read aloud to 8-9 year-old children. Older children, teenagers, and adults should enjoy it, too, especially if they enjoyed other children’s classics such as Treasure Island. Last Night's Review: Moonfleet, Salisbury Playhouse, Brendan McCusker, Southern Daily Echo, 25 April 2018 With its enchanting prose and evocative storytelling, this timeless classic weaves a captivating tapestry of adventure, loyalty, and the pursuit of hidden truths. In 1963 the BBC aired a five-episode radio series of Moonfleet adapted by Morna Stuart and produced by Brandon Acton-Bond. [11] I was actually *more* patient with convoluted, old-fashioned prose when I was a kid than I am now, but I would have not finished this book. The friend who gave it to me read it at eight and only remembers how dull it was.

Smugglers, betrayal, murder, love, avarice, it would be difficult to say what Falkner’s late 18th Century tale of adventure doesn’t have. In my opinion Moonfleet equals Stevenson’s or Twain’s works although it’s never quite received the same recognition. ORVILLE PRESCOTT (Aug 31, 1951). "Books of The Times: Comparison With Stevenson Many Chilling Adventures". New York Times. p.12. A fine story of coming of age and treasure hunt starting from a village of smugglers in Southern England steeped in local tales and legends. A gothic melodrama set in England during the 18th century, the film is about John Mohune, a young orphan ( Jon Whiteley), who is sent to the Dorset village of Moonfleet to stay with his mother's former lover, Jeremy Fox. Fox ( Stewart Granger), is a morally ambiguous character, an elegant gentleman intimately involved with smugglers. [3] On the run from the law, Mohune and Fox must decipher a coded message in their pursuit of a fabulous diamond hidden long ago.Corfe Castle and Carisbrooke Castle are key plot locations. [3] :144,159 Adaptations in other media [ edit ] TV and film [ edit ] Moonfleet Teacher's Notes, Penguin Readers" (PDF). Pearson Education Limited . Retrieved 19 June 2019. Through this literary gem, Falkner keeps you on the edge of your seats and effortlessly transports you to mysterious seascapes. In this review I would not share any quotes or details of the plot. Oh, the joy to read it for the first time!

John Meade Falkner, the son of a country cleryman, was born in 1858. After taking his degree at Oxford, he went to Newcastle-upon-Tyne as a private tutor to the sons of Andrew Noble. When they had grown up he stayed on with the family, and entered the firm where Sir Andrew worked. He travelled a great deal for the firm, particularly to the Balkans, helping to export warships and armaments, for which he received many decorations from appreciative foreign governments. The question now is if I should read more by the author? Has anybody read The Lost Stradivarius? Is it as good? Please advise me. ETA: It seems it’s Gothic in style and of the horror genre, so very different from Moonfleet! In 2017 the Salisbury Playhouse announced a major new musical adaptation of Moonfleet with book and lyrics by Gareth Machin and music by Russell Hepplewhite. The show ran from 19 April to 5 May 2018. [7] [8] [9] [10]Meade Falkner was a great collector of books, and an expert palaeographer - he even received a medal from the Pope for this. He was a benefactor to libraries, not only in England, but also to the Vatican library in Rome. He loved the small Cotswold town of Burford which it was said of in 1970 that it owed its then present state of preservation to his generosity. He was buried in its churchyard after his death in 1932.
