About this deal

More Happy Than Not is the debut novel by American author Adam Silvera, published June 2, 2015 by Soho Teen. Part Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, part Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Adam Silvera's extraordinary debut confronts race, class, and sexuality during one charged near-future summer in the Bronx. Aaron is the victim of a brutal assault that, even more so than meeting Thomas, changes everything for him. One of the effects of the injuries he suffers as a result of the beating is anterograde amnesia. This the medical name for the inability of the brain to form new memories. Medications designed for Alzheimer’s patients have been used to treat it with varying levels of success. The one thing Aaron now really wants to forget is being told that the condition occasionally proves permanently irreversible since there is no current procedure capable of fixing nature does not do on its own. Making such a prognosis even worse is that neurologists do not yet fully understand one of the great mysteries left in science: this whole business of memory creation, storage, and recall. In the worst-case scenario, Aaron could conceivably be left to live the rest of his life with only the memories that were stored before the accident still capable of being recalled. But it turns out that even that potential outcome is more fraught with difficulty than the average person. From the shapes cast by the green paper lantern, you would never know that there were two boys sitting closely to one another trying to find themselves. You would only see shadows hugging indiscriminate." In his twisty, gritty, profoundly moving debut—called “mandatory reading” by the New York Times—Adam Silvera brings to life a charged, dangerous near-future summer in the Bronx.

Happier” is a modified form of “happy,” which is an adjective that you will use to define how someone feels. Happiness, the state of being happy, is the feeling of joy and contentment, as any dictionary will tell you. There are books that make you feel like a voyeur, as the characters seem so real that you get the impression to spy on them, somehow. More Happy Than Not definitely belongs to that category, and hooked me from the very first sentence.a b Bellafante, Ginia (2015-06-19). " 'More Happy Than Not,' by Adam Silvera". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved 2022-01-01. Seriously - some parts punched me in the guts and made me sob, others made me want to hit something, yet I smiled so big I can't even express how much love and attachment I feel for Aaron - despite his flaws, his wanderings through life reached out to my heart. That's all I can say. This book is full of big issues - issues you better not drop in a book if you don't intend to HANDLE them (including suicide, depression, and homophobia). Well, the fact is, they all were correctly dealt with, and frankly, I'm, kind of, maybe, for sure in awe of Adam Silvera for that. Not that everything is perfect and gets its HEA, NO. It's not. It's messed-up and weird and flawed - yet it's incredible, because you know what? THAT'S HOW LIFE GOES. and maybe, maaaybe one time you're there long after the last class has let out for the day, and you know you're going to do it right then, when the building is empty of anyone you'd want to see you triumph, as well as everyone you wouldn't want to see you fall. maybe you shove your hypothetical headphones into your hypothetical ears and listen to your favorite hypothetical cassette on the hypothetical bus ride to your hypothetical home.

First was They Both Die at the End(we ALL knew how that would go down) but with the title of this one, I hoped for slightly less heartbreak and soul crushing. BUT I was wrong. So wrong. But this - combined with all the suicidal stuff - it was just too much, and it rubbed me the wrong way. Beyond popular media, More Happy Than Not has been discussed in academic journals, including English Journal, [11] The Lancet, [12] Children's Literature, [13] Oregon Library Association Quarterly, [14] The Clearing House, [15] and Research on Diversity in Youth Literature. [16] [17] It was also analyzed in two chapters from Engaging with Multicultural YA Literature in the Secondary Classroom. [18] [19] Accolades for More Happy Than Not YearIn the months after his father’s suicide, it’s been tough for sixteen-year-old Aaron Soto to find happiness again—but he’s still gunning for it. With the support of his girlfriend Genevieve and his overworked mom, he’s slowly remembering what that might feel like. But grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist prevent him from forgetting completely. But I did like the characters. Aaron had an interesting mind to delve into. Gen wasn't two-demensional like one might expect a side character like her to be. I loved Thomas. I loved (?) Collin. I'm not going to tell you a whole lot about More Happy Than Not. Basically, this is the story of 16-year old Aaron - a boy whose father committed suicide a few months ago and now lives in the projects with his family. It's about choosing a different path for himself . . . What I once thought to be laughably absurd -- two people being completely heals over head in love in three weeks -- now seems kind of accurate - even for adults. It seems especially believable for teenagers.

We can also use the idiom “more than” in expressions such as “I’m more than happy to do ___.” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines this idiom as meaning “to a great degree” or “extremely”( source). A special Deluxe Edition of Adam Silvera’s groundbreaking debut featuring an introduction by Angie Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of The Hate U Give; a new final chapter, "More Happy Ending"; and an afterword about where it all began. There is a strong preference for using “than” as a conjunction rather than a preposition in academic and formal writing. One way you can tell the difference is if the second pronoun is in the objective case or the nominative case (CMOS 5.183).When we use possessive adjectives to modify the nouns we’re describing, we must specify the nouns each time.

I used to think this instalove relationship between Aaron and Thomas was pretty ridiculous. I thought I'd been in love a couple of times in my life, but then when I met someone really special, it did sort of feel like this book! A Leteo procedure suppresses memories but Aaron finds himself recalling some of the past painful events. Friends like Thomas urge him to be ‘more happy than not,’ thus, the title of the novel. Eventually, Aaron goes through other surgical procedures in the same facility and erases his memories absolutely. Trying to forget the past prevents him from moving forward with his life. Nevertheless, he writes journals and occasionally goes through them to reminisce about the past. Update this section! Life hasn’t been easy for sixteen‑year‑old Aaron Soto, but with the help of his girlfriend, Genevieve, he’s slowly remembering what happiness might feel like. Then Thomas shows up . . . Thomas is smart and funny, and before long Aaron is spending all his time with him. But as Aaron’s feelings for Thomas intensify, tensions with his other friends start to build. Soon Aaron is faced with a choice – one that will make him question what it is he wants, and how far he’ll go to get it. As with other comparative forms, we can contrast someone or something at different points in time or use the phrase “more happily than” to compare two people, groups, or things. Sometimes pain is so unmanageable that the idea of spending another day with it seems impossible. Other times pain acts as a compass to help you get through the messier tunnels of growing up. But the pain can only help you find happiness if you can remember it."
