The best part about this book is how Bear's voice really comes through. He has a pretty distinctive way of speaking, and having watched him on TV so many times, I definitely felt like I could hear him in my head as I read. His humble, charming, spirited, and positive personality came through each word. I think Bear does an admirable job detailing how his various TV shows came about and how he has been able to forge his own path in an industry that doesn't often allow for independence like that. Even when a venture wasn't a success, he appreciated the opportunity and learned from it for the next one. This tame and unrevealing book might satisfy Grylls biggest fans that have watched all his shows, but for the rest of us it's bareboned and very surface. He obviously has a big wall up and doesn't want to allow people to see behind it, and he gets very defensive about the many criticisms of how he faked elements of his early TV shows. Mostly the book comes across as a PR memoir written by someone else to make the star look superhuman, which makes sense since it's published by a company he has done shows for and wants to promote him.

There is a very brief mention of his faith. At some point in his life (he doesn't say when) he had some type of spiritual conversion and he mostly says it involved his following a "higher power." Then later in the book there is a one-sentence mention of his Christianity, but he never explains what that is. He makes an anti-religion statement, which I found odd since it contradicted his support of people having faith, but he never fleshes out what he actually believes so it's too generic to help anyone. I adore Bear Grylls as a person. He always seems to incorporate his life lessons and realistic views of who he is and what he is doing. I appreciate this about him. I have seen episodes of his various shows and think that they are incredible and entertaining. This book offers a reflection on that process but then more so with the second half discussing other aspects of his life.Immersing readers in some truly remarkable adventures and sharing personal stories from Bear's toughest expeditions, this inspiring autobiography captures the exhilarating reality behind some of his hairiest survival missions. The other critique is that the chapters roughly contained different themes, but felt more like an ongoing interview or sit down chat that led to writing down the stories, without enough editing to put everything about a single topic together. It felt like this was not done to emphasize a point but just how the information came out when chatting with someone. This works in a conversation (and the audiobook maybe better suited for this style) but not as well in a memoir. He really cares about people, making the planet a better place, the environment, helping others, his family, and being a good person. Bear doesn’t thrive on being famous and he really loves his wife and boys. It comes through clearly in his book. In Never Give Up, global adventurer, Chief Scout and TV presenter Bear Grylls chronicles his extraordinary life and career since stepping on to screen.

When you screw up, admit it, apologize, do what you can to make amends. Then let it go. Guilt can be a heavy anchor. I've been a fan of Bear Grylls for awhile, so I was very excited to be asked to review an early copy of his newest autobiography, Never Give Up. I haven't read his first memoir, but this one focuses on how he got started in TV, the adventures he's had over multiple shows, and what his life is like today, and since I know him best from his show Running Wild, I thought this seemed like a great place to start! The chapters are fairly short, each one practically its own story or answer to a frequently asked question. I really enjoyed his stories about the celebrities he has taken into the wild and how each of those adventures is set up. Bear also takes some chapters to delve into more personal thoughts on things like fear, faith, and family, and his words are often very inspiring. His family is so important to him, and it was really nice to get to know them better and see how he makes family time a priority, even with his booming career. Along the way, Bear opens up about his most personal challenges, discovers the true value of adventure, and embodies the enduring power of courage, kindness and a never give up spirit.

While I was never a huge fan of the author’s TV shows, I certainly appreciate his many accomplishments throughout his life. Someone who had done so much, and a success by any measure, not necessarily monetary, has much to share with the rest of us.

I think my favorite part of the writing was the incorporation of snippets of his relationships with his family and the people that he has worked with on different projects, as well as the real risks that they took while filming the shows. He has an authentic voice that comes through in his writing. With that said, my critiques are that the formatting was awful, making it difficult to read the eARC on Kindle. That has nothing to do with the content of the book but was distracting. I have seen the final copy and it does not have any of this and includes photos. Bear Grylls has always sought out adventure. From childhood escapades to would-record-breaking expeditions, to his infamous survival challenges, Bear has spent a lifetime in the wild. Another issue is that there aren't any dates in the book and he assume we all know what his many TV shows were about and when they aired. I haven't seen most of them and didn't know what he was talking about most of the time. He could have written with much more detail and given better stories. He first hosted the hit Discovery Channel series Man vs. Wild, which became one of the most-watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers. Since then he has gone on to host more extreme adventure TV shows across more global networks than anyone else in history, including Running Wild with Bear Grylls and the Emmy Award-nominated interactive Netflix show You vs. Wild.
