About this deal

The Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter arrives in a long box emblazoned more than fifty times with the Nikon logo. Inside we find the following: It’s also ideally suited for use with the Nikon D850 as the high-resolution sensor should ensure plenty of detail is extracted from the film. I used it with the D850 and AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED for our review. I used ISO 100 for all the digitising I did as this ensures high-quality results, however, film grain and texture is evident in all my images. That’s not the adapter’s nor the camera’s fault, it’s just a feature of the film. Sample Images You could, if need be shoot the neg in RAW, and then convert it to positive in post which I played with and found I did not need that latitude because the adjustments required were either unnecessary or very slight. Obviously, if you were using the slide adapter and shooting positives to begin with, you have the full range of D850 adjustments at your disposal, but I found no problems with the .jpg output of the neg capture. That said, if I uncover some hero images in this process I will then have them professionally scanned for maximum quality. The ES-2/D850 combo make the tedious task of going through a ton of negs relatively pleasant and faster than anything I have seen offered previously.

Not sure exactly how your half mount system works. Any chance you could put up a photo of it? I’d be keen to give it a try. Given that your subject is a finished photograph, it is important that settings be adjusted so that its colors and tones can accurately be converted to digital. Colors and tones can be regulated using Picture Controls, and exposure modified appropriately by adjustments to metering mode and exposure compensation. Effective use can also be made of white balance in compensating for the light source. Choosing NEF (RAW) format lets you use NEF (RAW) processing for precise adjustments to white balance and Picture Controls after shooting. Exposure must however be tuned before shooting, regardless of the option selected for image quality. The description that follows provides settings for recording JPEG or TIFF pictures for immediate use. Recommended settings:

Build and Handling

Boy wouldn’t it be great if such a kit existed for scanning Medium Format film? Although, if I’m honest, I think the different frame sizes of medium format film would make such a scanning setup difficult to manage. And such a setup, by it’s very nature, requires you to capture an entire film frame in one go, via your digital sensor. Depending on the camera one is using to scan the film, you’d end up with a final image that could be anywhere from 8MP to 60MP in pixel density. That’s quite a big range, and what’s the point of shooting medium format in the first place, if your scans aren’t going to be any bigger or higher resolution than if you scanned 35mm film? While the negative digitizer is very useful, there are a number of features with which it can’t be used. If you have any of the features that disable live view selected, and you press the i button to select Negative digitizer, you will see it grayed out. Makroobjektive für Nikon, meine Empfehlungen Makroobjektive für Nikon, meine Empfehlungen. Für Nikon stehen verschiedene... Mounted slides can be inserted into the FH‑5 slide mount holder. Unmounted slide film can be inserted into the FH‑4. In the past I’ve scanned with macro bellows and slide copier attachments. I’ve used copy stands in which the camera dangles precariously vertically. I’ve tried flatbeds and Kodak Pakons. I’ve said “to hell with my wallet” and sent my film to be scanned by labs all over the country, spending my money to save my time.

Please note that this adapter is compatible with select Nikon micro lenses, such as AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40 mm F2.8 G, AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60 mm F2.8G ED (when used with 62 mm Adapter A), and AF Micro-NIKKOR 60 mm F2.8D (when used with 62 mm Adapter B). Attach the adapter to the lens like any ND filter and secure it with the screw. Photographing slide film is basically run-of-the-mill macro photography, differing only in that the subject is a frame of film, so you need only take the same care that you would in accurately photographing any other small object. The biggest difference between slide film and most other subjects is that the colors and tones have already been adjusted to create a finished work.

On the whole using natural light worked well. I only needed to adjust the exposure a little one way or the other using the exposure compensation dial on the camera when the images were especially dark or bright. The demand for digitizing film comes not only from hobbyists and photographers with large image collections that were captured on film, but also from young photographers enjoying the recent boom in taking photos using film cameras and having the results digitized at a photo lab. The Negative Digitizer Note that pictures taken using the negative digitizer will be recorded in JPEG Fine★ format regardless of the option selected for Image quality. Nikon should at least offer their own extension ring as an ES-2 accessory. Even if they don't want to include it in the ES-2 kit, they could sell them as an accessory for crap sake. They shouldn't make this nice new film digitizer incompatible with one of their best micro lenses by cheaping out on the accessory pieces (which are plastic and would cost mere pennies).

A slide in the holder prior to sliding into position before making a copy. The original print, copied to slide, is about 75 years old. An English soldier smuggled out a camera and 2 rolls of B&W film when posted to Burma during WW2. Unlike the Nikon ES-1, the ES-2 doesn’t hold slides directly within it. Instead, a slide holder or film holder is used. The slide holder is capable of holding two mounted slides side by side while the film holder is designed to hold strips of up to six frames of film.

Also I'm shooting teathered Raw. I didn't get what I wanted with the in-camera-conversion from negatives. I am using an SB5000 flash fired remotely by the camera. I have the flash pointed directly into the ES-2 with the 14mm flash diffuser in place about 2" from the ES-2. My settings are 1/250, f/11, M, ISO 64, flash set to Manual 1/16 power. I will also need a Nikon macro lens with a 62mm filter thread, which Nikon offers in both of their major mounts. However the ES-2 cannot be used with all Nikon macro lenses, such as the Nikon Z 105mm which I reviewed earlier in the year. For me, a Nikon Z mount camera owner, my only choice is the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 50mm. Nikon supplies two 62mm adaptor rings that enable the ES-2 Adapter to be mounted onto the AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED and AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D lens. It can be mounted directly onto the AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G. This adapter is designed for use with select Nikon micro lenses. You cannot use it with any other camera lenses. SB-5000 with diffuser. A built-in flash would have done away with the need for the SC-29 cord, but that's just me - I'm not going to restart that old argument

Lightroom, Capture One & DxO, meine Empfehlung! Lightroom, Capture One & DxO, was für wen? Lightroom zeichnet ja nach w... The spacing distance based on the Fuji lens information posted seems to be in the region of 50mm more than with the Nikon 60mm G. With adaptor A and depending on the way a slide is positioned in the holder - the distance from the Nikon lens front filter ring to the slide surface can be varied between about 47mm and 62mm. I will be purchasing a Nikon Z6 soon and wondering if the addition of the Nikon 60mm lens + the ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter is really worth it.

There’s a zoom mechanism built into the ES-2 Adapter that allows you to adjust the framing of the slide. With the 60mm f/2.8G ED lens on the D850, I found that this had to be around its shortest point for the slide to fill the frame. Performance
