Description

These differentiated Numicon times tables worksheets are perfect for helping children to get to grips with basic multiplication problems. Numicon Baseboard: a pegboard that the Numicon shapes can fit on to – the holes on the shapes fit into the pegs. Based on a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach, Numicon uses structured imagery and apparatus to help children explore and understand mathematical concepts. As you can see from this diagram, each shape can help children to imagine what each number along the line looks like. It also helps children to explore the relationship between numbers. Because each shape has more holes than the last it provides a gentle introduction to the idea of counting, particularly for EYFS children.

Numicon aligned to the Curriculum for Wales Foundation Phase Mathematical Development Area of Learning (PDF)An at Home Kit is created for the parents to support children to do maths using a sequence of easy to play and fun activities to encourage learning about basic concepts of maths. At home kit is not suggested to be used for children under 36 months. Here, we have created the number 13 using Numicon shapes. The pupil is likely to be familiar with counting to thirteen and can happily tell you this. They may also be able to write 13 in numerals. Using Numicon in maths lessons with EYFS and KS1 children can help you teach a variety of topics in an interactive and multisensory way. Here are just a few topics Numicon is often used to teach: In this way, each Numicon Shape provides children with both a physical and a visual image of a number. Because of this, children start to recognise and explore the relationship between different numbers, as they notice the difference in shape, pattern and the number of holes in each Numicon Shape.

As children get older Numicon can be used to help explore and explain slightly more advanced topics such as: A variety of patterns can be created using apparatus. By creating and describing patterns, children can start to build on their number recognition and problem solve. For example sorting the shapes in a pattern of 2 holes, 4 holes, 2 holes, 4 holes etc. Using the Numicon Picture Baseboard and the overlay that comes with it, children can match the shapes to the pattern on the baseboard. 4. Number bonds and calculating Numicon has a long history of being used within schools. Its success in helping children get to grips with foundational math skills has encouraged parents to use Numicon resources at hometo facilitate learning and development. By extending learning beyond the classroom, children can reinforce their knowledge with an already familiar resource. When done under the supervision of an adult, this can confirm that a child is counting in sequence. They would then take the five piece and place it on top of their number. At this point, try to encourage pupils to line up the odd pieces where relevant to help them to see the patterns being made. Numicon gives pupils an idea of what the value of each number looks like and that when we count in ones, the number gets bigger by the same amount each time.

Each Numicon shape represents a specific number. Having numbers represented as physical shapes also provides a tactile and intuitive way of learning. If your child’s school uses Numicon, they may hold workshops to tell you how it is used in the classroom, and you can always ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions. Numicon is the market-leading primary school maths programme developed by the Oxford University Press. Numicon shapes have become highly popular and effective teaching tools, used by educators all around the world to support children's maths and numeracy development. The first is simply to place a Numicon shape on the baseboard and use the Numicon pegs to fill each hole, counting using one to one correspondence as they do. Numicon can be used across EYFS, KS1, KS2, and to help bridge the gap to KS3. Numicon’s approach to teaching maths helps children to see connections between numbers, supporting children as they learn early maths skills in nursery, primary school, and beyond. It's a multi-sensory way of learning, which means children learn by seeing and feeling. This is great for kinaesthetic learners – children who learn by doing. Numicon set holds 1x Numicon Baseboard, 3x Numicon Threading Laces, 1x Zig Zag Book Number Line, 1x Numicon Feely Bag, 52x Numicon Coloured Pegs, 1x Numicon 0-10 Numeral Cards, 1x Numicon Baseboard Picture Overlays, 1x First Steps with Numicon at Home Activity Book and 32x Numicon shapes.

Has been proven to have a positive impact on children’s enjoyment as well as giving them the confidence to demonstrate how and why they arrived at their answer Can be used flexibly alongside your existing resources, as a complete maths programme or to encourage mastery Initially when introducing fractions, pupils can use the Numicon shapes to represent the denominator of the fraction and then place pegs into the holes to show the numerator, therefore ‘filling in’ the fraction that is given. Numicon is designed to develop a sound understanding of numbers, and the relationship between numbers, digits and place value using structured apparatus. It helps children reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and spoken language. As Numicon is excellent for creating patterns and numbers in different ways, it is great for helping pupils to find the multiples of a given number and therefore to learn their times tables. This is an excellent use of Numicon for Year 2 (2, 5 and 10 times tables), Year 3 (3, 4 and 6 times tables) and Year 4 (6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables). We have a selection of wonderful Numicon resources to help you teach your children.
