Most of the Imperial leaders we see in the movies rule through a combination of fear and manipulation. I wanted to create something different: a commander who could lead through loyalty. The result was Thrawn, a tactical genius whose troops follow him willingly, and who will fight for him whether or not he's watching over their shoulders. [13] Five years after the Battle of Naboo, a smuggler's freighter, the Bargain Hunter is fleeing trouble with its crew of three: Captain Dubrak "Rak" Qennto, Maris Ferasi and a very young Jorj Car'das. They are on the run from Progga the Hutt, and to escape, Car'das punches in random hyperspace coordinates that send the ship into the Unknown Regions. a b c "Timothy Zahn: Survivor 's Questions and Answers". Before leaving the Republic, genetic samples were taken from all passengers and crew, with the stated intention of preventing a Hive virus. [1] C'baoth's sample was used by Emperor Palpatine to create a clone of him, called Joruus C'baoth. This clone was discovered in 9 ABY, [3] by Thrawn. The clone turned out even more unstable than the original donor, and eventually attempted to take control of the Empire from Thrawn. [4] The clone was ultimately killed in a confrontation with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and the former Emperor's Hand Mara Jade. [5] Zahn's working title for the book was Wild Card, which Bantam vetoed because of its similarity to their other series, Wild Cards. Bantam also rejected his second favorite title, The Emperor's Hand. [21] Warlord's Gambit was also a potential title, but ultimately Heir to the Empire was chosen, which according to Zahn was suggested by Aronica. [21] [31]

Thrawn is voiced by Tris King in the 1994 computer game Star Wars: TIE Fighter, [17] and by Tim Russell in the 1997 audio drama Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire. [18] In seasons three and four of Star Wars Rebels, Thrawn is voiced by Lars Mikkelsen. [5] [6] [19] Mikkelsen reprised his role as Thrawn from Rebels in live-action in the 2023 Disney+ series Ahsoka. Outbound Flight set out from Yaga Minor in the Outer Rim, under the command of Captain Pakmillu. For three weeks, it stayed in Republic space, traveling in turn to Lonnaw, Argai via the Glythe sector, the Kokash and Mondress sectors, and making a final stop at Roxuli. 230 light-years from the edge of Wild Space, the Outbound Flight intended to stop to calibrate its navigational instruments, and then journey into the Unknown Regions. [2] After traveling in a large circle through them, it would eventually head beyond to another galaxy. [9] Zahn's Specter of the Past (1997) finds Thrawn seemingly resurrected ten years after his death when he reappears to lead the decimated Imperial forces against the unstable New Republic. [11] [34] A record surfaces called the Caamasi Document, which indicates that a small group of Bothans were perpetrators in the tragic destruction of the planet Caamas and causes more than a hundred alien warships to gather in orbit over the Bothans' homeworld, which the Empire hopes to use to its benefit. The Fight Against the Empire Will Continue in Star Wars Rebels Season Three". StarWars.com. November 30, 2015 . Retrieved July 18, 2016. Referencing Zahn's annotations in the 20th Anniversary Edition of Heir to the Empire, John Booth wrote in Wired that Zahn "created and developed Thrawn as a character [by] deliberately establishing the Grand Admiral as a villain who leads not by coercion and fear but through valuing strategy and loyalty". [14] Zahn explained in 2008 that Thrawn's version of the Empire is different from that of Palpatine because Thrawn does not have Palpatine's megalomania and xenophobia. [15] Calling Thrawn and Mara Jade his favorite of the characters he created, Zahn noted in 2006 that writing the Grand Admiral "provides the intellectual challenge of trying to come up with new, clever, and (hopefully) workable tactics and strategies." [16] Zahn has also stated that Thrawn's entire motivation, both serving in the Empire and the Ascendancy, is to protect the Chiss people and "everything else flows from that." [8] Portrayal [ edit ] The Combined Operations Center or ComOps Center for Outbound Flight was located on Dreadnaught-One just behind the bridge/ monitor room complex, stretching for thirty meters between the two main bow corridors. From this area, Captain Pakmillu had control over all six Dreadnaughts. All 200 single-seat landspeeders and swoops used for transportation around Outbound Flight could be controlled from this point. [1]

If you came out of 2004's Survivor's Quest wanting answers to all those dangling mysteries, they’re answered in Outbound Flight--you may even get answers to some questions you didn't have at the end of the previous novel. It's interesting to see a young Thrawn who is already a strategic genius but also growing into his skills, at a time when he's not overtly villainous and he's trying to do the right thing. (Although I do question if Zahn made him too reasonable at times.) I think the story could have been tightened up a bit, especially when it comes to the presence of Obi-Wan and Anakin on Outbound Flight, but I enjoyed revisiting Outbound Flight even if the ending made me cry. Again. As the two sides prepare for battle, the Vagaari arrive. Sensing their hostility, the Jedi aboard Outbound Flight band together in a telepathic link to confuse the Vagaari. But Thrawn takes advantage of their distraction to open fire on both hostile forces. After severe damage has been inflicted on the vessel, C'baoth gives in entirely to his rage and falls to the dark side, choking Thrawn through the Force. Rather than let such a valuable officer be killed, Thrawn's fleet drops a lethal radiation bomb into the vessel's bridge, killing C'baoth and all the other Jedi on board, except Lorana. The Vagaari receive a sound thrashing at Thrawn's hands, and are forced to retreat, but not before Car'das escapes their ship. Mist Encounter". Star Wars Books.
