About this deal

There are also plenty of use case opportunities for the batteries around the house, beyond outdoor adventure. During testing, we found the Pale Blue Earth rechargeable batteries to work equally well in TV remotes, Lego trains, small R/C cars, and in a small AA-powered AM/FM radio I still use at my workbench in the garage. This is a technically complex issue to answer comprehensively, but let’s look at it through the lens of power output. For any application where power matters (such as a headlamp where brightness matters or a remote control toy where power/speed matters), lithium ion chemistry is superior. But, consider this: Pale Blue Earth’s AA lithium-ion rechargeable batteries only have a capacity of 1,700 milliampere hours (mAh). That unit, mAh, measures the energy charge a battery can hold and how long its juice will last. Compared to Pale Blue Earth’s AA batteries, alkaline AA batteries hold 2,850 mAh, and straight-up lithium AA batteries can hold as much as 2,700-3,300 mAh.

Inside Pale Blue, you’ll find a design that’s expected to endure more than 1,000 charge cycles. For the sake of comparison, most electronics are considered well-built if they’re able to withstand 500 cycles. When you look at the batteries inside the typical pair of earbuds, wireless mice, tablets, and smartphones, you’ll find that 500 cycles are actually pretty close to what you end up with. So doubling that makes these pretty durable as far as batteries go. I appreciate this recent progressive step to USB-C on the batteries. Previous Pale Blue Earth versions used a micro-USB, which is still available on a 9V battery size. The next step will hopefully be a USB-C option on the source end of the charging cable. Battery Chemistry & Comparing Competitors (Photo/Cameron Martindell) Micro USB or USB-C Charge Port– Some models come with micro USB and others with USB-C. However, it looks like they are moving towards USB-C for all.In 1990, the Voyager 1 space Probe took a photo toward Earth from 3.7 billion miles away in which Earth can be seen as nothing more than one small blue pixel. This image helped many people realize the finiteness of our world and our resources. We believe that we should be using these resources more wisely and see the recent advancements in battery technology as a way to help us avoid the need to use or dispose of so many batteries. Charging time is surprisingly fast, but will depend on the USB power you are using. You should expect under one hour to charge your AAA's and under two hours to charge your AA’s. Our 9V and D batteries take under 3 and 5 hours, respectively.

Pale Blue Earth claims these batteries have 1,000 charge cycles. The brand says that equates to preventing 1,000 alkaline batteries from being used and disposed of. On-Board Smart Technology Provides Safe Charging– No more batteries ruining expensive electronic devices. From what I can tell, this works pretty well. PBE promises protection to the battery and, in turn, your device as well.In the time it takes to watch an episode of your favorite TV show, a Pale Blue battery is fully charged and ready to power your device. 2. Convenient USB-C charge port While lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are not yet suited for every situation, there are a lot of instances where they have proven to be very handy. Both logistically in not needing to go buy more disposable batteries and ecologically, minimizing the amount of battery waste produced. There isn’t a lot to dig into here; they are your standard battery but with a twist. But at a high level, here you go.

The power output of our product is consistently 40% stronger than an equivalent Alkaline and 50% more than a NiMh rechargeable. (Pale Blue holds stronger longer) And don't forget, Pale Blue recharges super fast so you can recharge conveniently anytime you need a fresh charge. A couple of years ago I was introduced to my first recharge-via-USB AA battery. The concept was novel, the execution was not particularly noteworthy as performance was not what I’d expect for in something trying to replace conventional alkaline. One of the keys to preventing the need for and existence of more disposable batteries is to have the ultimate in convenience. Micro USB cables are ubiquitous and almost alway within arms reach. This means, no matter where you are, you should be able to find a Micro USB cable to charge up. USB C has it's upsides, but it's just not as readily available — yet. We have started to use these throughout our house and slowly replacing our batteries with these in our devices, such as my daughter’s VTech KidiZoom Camera, along with my Xbox controllers used with Xbox Cloud. For one thing, they’re are supposed to be able to put out higher levels of voltage stability, higher current output, and greater reliability than typical alkaline batteries. In almost every respect, they certainly outperform older NiMh rechargeable batteries. And as a result, the recharge time from Pale Blue is basically five times as fast as older batteries used to be. So it’s clear they’ve raised the bar, so to speak. Millions of batteries get thrown away, every day. Because of how batteries are made, it’s pretty tedious to recycle them. But at the same time, it’s important to do because they’re not exactly biodegradable. Over the span of its lifetime, a single Pale Blue battery could theoretically prevent you from needing to use 1,000 regular batteries. Most of my “heavy” use for these has been in my kiddo’s toys and my Xbox controller. Without actually testing with some equipment I don’t own, I can say from use that I get about the same amount of game time on the controller with these as any other AA battery, so I consider that something I like.

Surrounded by breathtaking aspen-clad mountains and icy rivers, the team is inspired daily by their environment, fueling their drive to protect and conserve our natural world. Because even as the battery approaches terminal quantities of power, it’s able to keep its discharge wattage up, unlike older NiMh batteries, and unlike alkaline batteries. With either of those, you’d start to see your bulb gradually get dimmer as the batteries ran their course. With the Pale Blue, you’ll only start to see dimming when the battery is truly on its last legs.Since then, a number of AA and AAA rechargeable battery systems have hit the market. But the common limitations — requiring a specific charger, and the NiMH chemistry — are still an issue with many of them. Pale Blue Earth launched its own version of rechargeable batteries claiming to have solved or worked around some of those problems. I got my hands on a set to test them out for myself.
