It proved a traumatic experience for the teenager which he struggled to cope with until his manager suggested he becomes a nurse. Not once does Paul use any diakon– word for ordinary servants.[1] Rather, he typically used the term diakonos for Christian ministers.[2] These diakonoi include Paul himself (Rom. 15:25; 1 Cor. 3:5; Eph. 3:7; Col. 1:23, etc), Timothy (1 Tim. 4:6), Epaphras (Col. 1:7), Tychicus (Eph. 6:21–22; Col. 4:7–9), Apollos (1 Cor. 3:5), and even Jesus Christ (Rom. 15:8).[3] He also referred to a woman, Phoebe, as a diakonos in Romans 16:1-2.[4] Phoebe was a diakonos, or deacon, of the church at Cenchrea.[5] a b MacDonald, Margaret Y., “Was Celsus Right? The Role of Women in the Expansion of Early Christianity”, Early Christian Families in Context: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue, ed. David L. Balch and Carolyn Oziak (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 2003), p. 166

The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (TDNT) states that diakoneō was often used for the work of women in texts outside of the New Testament.[14] However, this association of diakoneō and women is also evident within the New Testament. This unassuming association with women is significant considering that Jesus and Paul frequently use diakon– words for themselves and for Christian ministry in general. They regarded Christian ministry as both sacred and humble service. In the course of its narrative, Walls and Bridges includes frank reflections on its author’s experiences of working as a mental health nurse at St Lawrence’s and Broadmoor Hospitals, and there are comments too on training for mental health nurses, nursing roles, initiatives and qualifications, and life in psychiatric hospital wards. Deacon challenges common misconceptions and stereotypes and offers lessons from his extensive experience of psychiatry that will be enlightening and challenging for the general reader, and informative and resonant for the mental health specialist. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) last inspected Broadmoor in 2018 and rated the hospital as Good overall with a rating of Outstanding for caring. The CQC’s report highlights our work in encouraging co-production and patient involvement and in making sure that patients are able to raise issues and identify areas for improvement. camera trainee / clapper loader / trainee grip / grip trainee / second grip (26 episodes, 2005-2011) Deacon followed this with becoming a member of Wigan's coaching staff, working closely with manager Shaun Wane.We encourage the active involvement of patients, their families and carers in the development of patients’ care and treatment plans and in the wider work of the hospital. The wards Mr Deacon says a nursing career was the last thing he wanted to do as a teenager, despite his father being a mental health nurse. He said: "The buildings had bars in the windows. It looked very much like a cell. Some patients would even say 'I'm just going to my cell'.

Paul Deacon hopes his book Walls and Bridges: Bodmin to Broadmoor will dispel myths about the institution and encourage more people into the profession. A modern depiction of St. Phoebe, a leader in the early Christian movement who was one of Paul’s most trusted patrons and emissaries. In his letter to the Romans, Paul refers to Phoebe by the Greek term diakonos, which most Bible’s translate as “deacon.” However, this term, at least during the first century C.E, most probably referred to a “minister” or leader of a congregation. As a first-century woman, Phoebe breaks the mold. She leads the Cenchrean congregation, has money, and generously shares it. Paul knew the church at Cenchrea was in good hands. As spiritual brother and sister, they co-labored in the Gospel.
