About this deal

For best results, it is advisable to clip any feathers, especially on heavily feathered breeds, and wash/replace anything that could further increase the spread of the mites. We also recommend using a follow-up treatment roughly 2 weeks later, in the form of a topical wash that can be sponged on to the horse’s legs, and can be repeated a few times over the following weeks. The thorough cleaning of the horse’s surrounding environment should also be repeated after every treatment to drastically reduce the chance of re-infestation. Feather Mites: Apply liberally to dry legs using a soft brush or sponge and massage thoroughly. Once weekly washing is recommended using Nettex Equine Veterinary Surgical Scrub where necessary to remove the build-up of dirt and grime before reapplication. Although they can occur in any breed, feather mite infestations appear to be much more prevalent in the heavy horse breeds, likely because the feather creates an environment ideal for mite growth and reproduction. Signs & Symptoms of Feather Mites Lime sulpur dip is made from calcium hydroxide, sulphur and water. Researchers applied a solution of 97.5% diluted to a 5% wash. That is, 50ml of lime sulphur solution in 1 litre of water. The horses were washed and then had the treatment solution applied via spray bottle to wet hair. The solution was left on the horse – not rinsed out. This treatment was applied once a week for four weeks. Five facts about the horse’s gut (and how we can use this information to help keep our horses healthy)

As an alternative baby oil is also mineral oil and is similar, I regularly use this instead of pig oil as sometimes per litre its cheaper and its more refined but also usually contains paraffinum as an added ingredient. When a horse has a mite infestation, it’s not just the adult mites that will be present at any one time, there will also be eggs and developing larvae. Eggs cannot be killed effectively with any form of treatment, so whatever method you choose will need to be repeated at least once (although it is recommended to do this several times) approximately 2 weeks apart, to allow the eggs to develop into adult mites before retreatment. If your horse is displaying similar symptoms to those listed above, but during warmer weather, it’s possible your horse is suffering from a fly allergy called Sweet Itch, or a horse lice infestation. Feed a balanced diet. Many nutrients including protein, copper, zinc and vitamin A have a direct impact on the health and shine of your horse’s coat. Pig Oil for Horses

Clean the horses’ skin with an antibacterial wash prior to any treatment, to remove dead skin cells from around sores and scabs. This will reduce the number of places mites could hide and interfere with their food source, whilst also making it easier for any treatment to be absorbed into the skin. The most widely available brand is Millers. Millers also make oils used in the motor industry, so if you ask at a garage who is an agent for Millers Oils they should be able to get it for you. It comes in 5 gallon drums. I think it is about 30 pounds for the five gallons. This will last one horse years. When making up Pig oil and Sulphur it should be in a well ventilated place (without wind) or with a mask. It is not good to breath Sulphur powder into the lungs or to get it into the eyes. First of all, let’s look at pig oil. The doesn’t sound particularly appealing but its other name, mineral oil, sounds a lot better! Its consistency makes it easy to rub into feathers, to help provide a water repellent barrier between the horse’s skin and the mud. It’s often used on heavier horses due to this, but can also be effective on those with less feather as it gets through the hair, right down to the skin. And, as for the name, it was originally used on the skin of pigs, to help keep in it good condition and stop it drying out.

Once you’ve determined that your horse has feather mites, you’ll need to decide on your next steps. Here’s a few rules to follow… Showing and stain prevention: Apply a thin layer of Traditional Pig Oil using a sponge to mane, tail and body to create a lustrous shine and prevent the build-up of stains. Following treatment, nearly all of the horses achieved the lowest possible pruritis (itching) score, with only two showing mild signs of pruritis. Skin scrapings taken after treatment did not find any evidence of mites. Ariat KEP Le Chameau Le Mieux Premier Equine Shires Tally Ho Farm Tommy Hilfiger Uvex Woof Wear All Brands

Shoutbox

Brewers yeast is very good for digestion with the added bonus that it's very good for skin and hooves too, you should see a difference within a month. The skin should be supple and shiny at al times even with a winter coat if she is healthy and that will show in the state of her mallenders too. You could add oil to her feed but being what she is that might not be good for her waistline. Also, being what she is she might be finding your grass to rich for her which will all have an effect on the skin; gypsy cobs are bred to be hardy and do well on the cheapest ground, by bringing them out of their comfort zone to richer grazing and diets let alone being molly coddled (not saying you do, just generalizing!) with rugs and all sorts it's not surprising that their bodies and systems sometimes react differently.

Le Chameau Le Mieux Legacy Equestrian Leovet Likit Lincoln Liveryman Lorina NAF NIKWAX ONA Pampeano If your horse is prone to gastric ulcers or discomfort there may be justification to add a small amount of corn oil to his diet. One study* found that daily supplementation of corn oil, about three tablespoons, resulted in reduced gastric acid output and this may offer an inexpensive way to support gastric health. How do I make my horse super shiny? Some of the sample group were clipped while others were not and several different treatment methods (with and without shampoo) were applied. All horses in the study received the lime sulphur dip. Mane and tail detangler: Apply liberally to mane and tail using a soft brush or sponge and massage through with the fingers. Leave to penetrate then brush through. Reapply as necessary. When combined in a product like Mud Slide Lotion, or mud product that uses flowers of sulphur and pig oil, you have a product that’s easy to use, easy to apply (even if the horse has heavy feathering), helps maintain healthy skin and, because of pig oil’s mud and water repellent nature, the mud just slides of after a day in the field! While no studies have been done to prove the efficacy of using Pig Oil to treat feather mites, the fact that it has been around for so long and is used so widely indicates it must be effective.
