Yes, you can stand the Playbar on the ‘wrong’ side if you like, but that leaves you with raw metal against the surface of your furniture, an even bulkier shape to accomodate and the IR repeater facing the wrong direction, meaning signals from your remote control might not get through to your TV. I can’t see where the spec says this is a stereo only channel. It should be capable of outputting 5.1. Are you feeding the Playbase a 5.1 Dolby Digital signal? The key is to not exceed the maximum weight for each accessory, which should be provided in the product description and the instruction manual that comes with it. These limits can range from 50–100kg, and up to three accessories can be used at one time, roughly giving the entire set a maximum weight limit of 300kg or three to four users at a time. And what about the sound? Much bigger than you’d expect with a sound that’s wide and tall, and a performance that’s balanced across the frequency range, giving films, TV and music plenty or energy as well as describing them with a good amount of subtlety too. Sonos’ support technicians are very helpful (we know, we had to call them), and one way or another you will get up and running in the end, but in our experience it’s not always the super-simple process that Sonos sells it as. The Playbase and Playbar are practically inseparable when it comes to features, leaving the newer Beam to dominate when it comes to smarts. To make the Playbase sound its best, you'll want to run Trueplay, Sonos' room-modeling effect. The speaker will play sounds and you walk around your room waving your phone around. It feels quite silly, but the sound improvements are well worth it. The bass was richer and the sound field wider after I ran Trueplay.

Now, you should note that the Playbase only supports the 2.4GHz band so don’t be worried if you can’t find your 5GHz network. Sonos did this deliberately for a more reliable connection with better range. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus that produce heat. But my TV has regular 02 HDMI and 01 HDMI ARC ports (I don’t want other audio outputs to use be cause of poor audio output quality) and TV has no optical output.

Simply put: In terms of sound quality and ease of use, the Sonos Playbase trounces every other soundbase we’ve tested thus far, and sounds better than many of the soundbars we’ve tested, though admittedly few of them run anywhere near the Playbase’s price range.
