That’s a feature I’d like to see be standard in today’s handhelds. And one that I think doesn’t get enough credit. So good job there, Powkiddy. The “TF1” slot on your device holds the system firmware, so for that card 16GB is ideal. The “TF2” slot is for your game files, so you will want a larger card for that one. You can either use a single-card setup to host both your system files and the games on one card, or you can separate the two functions using a dual SD card setup. I recommend a dual-card setup for ease of use, and you can use that second SD card in other devices with a similar setup.

The X55 runs JELOS. It runs well, EmulationStation themes are supported, and they can be added manually or with Thememaster now as it's been updated to support the handheld. Some emulators have their own hotkeys. For example, to bring up the menu in Yabasanshiro (the default Saturn emulator), press the SELECT button. In PPSSPP (PSP emulator), press the L3 button. More info can be found here. But once we start looking at the internal specs, we can see that this was likely in the works for a while. Probably too long. When connected your PowKiddy X55 to an external display, you will need a mini HDMI adapter or a mini HDMI to HDMI cable. Some of this will be a retread of my original review, but I wanted to post an update with some new detail since the firmware has improved greatly since release, and some things have changed/improved over time.Looking at the stats for the X55, you can see it’s been in development since last year, using many of the specs that most gaming companies are now moving away from, including Powkiddy themselves. The RK3566 is the same chip used in the Anbernic RG353M, which is one of my most favourite handhelds from last year. If your gaming tastes are not all that high, and you’re just looking for a device that feels premium and can play your Super Nintendo, N64, Playstation, PSP, Arcade, ect… this could work well for you. The X55 looks really nice and is a fairly large gaming handheld. The one I was sent by Gogamegeek is a nice blue colour that came with a 256GB SD card with around 30,000 games included. I love the fact they have released a horizontal handheld again as it feels great to hold and is very ergonomic. The Powkiddy x55 is a pretty nice looking device. The design of the horizontal console is well thought out. It’s a big reason why Powkiddy really wanted to get this one out. Insert the 16GB microSD card into the “TF1” slot on the PowKiddy X55, and also insert the larger microSD card into the “TF2” slot. Power on the device and let it run through its initial setup. Once you see the main EmulationStation interface, press the START button and navigate to Quit > Shutdown System.

Lastly, the GPU is decent enough to run various shaders, in some cases with multiple passes. I tend to play GBA with a custom shader with two passes (VBA-Color at 0.25 darkening + LCD1x). For 8 and 16 bit games, zfast-crt-standard works great. Saturn emulation is surprisingly good. Switch from whatever is the default emulator to the Yaba Sanshiro standalone for best performance. 2D games all run full speed no problem, and some 3D games as well. More intensive titles will run between 40 and 59 fps depending, but Yaba Sanshiro's frameskip makes it completely transparent feels like a smooth 60 fps with no hiccups or issues. I'd say this is totally viable for Saturn emulation. Firmware updates have improved Saturn performance and many games run full speed or extremely close to it without frameskip now. I recently bought the Powkiddy X55 and reviewed it here. Now that I've had it a for a month how is it? Great! Put your X55 games card in your PC, and then move that Alekfull folder to any folder on your card. I usually use the 3do folder since it’s the first one in the list and I don’t have any 3DO games on my device. The fisrt TF card slot on the game console contains the system firmware, so a 16GB card is ideal. The second TF card slot is to store the game files. so it needs a larger card for that slot. You can either use a single card to store both your system files and games on one card, or you can separate the two functions with a dual card SD. I recommend a dual card setup for ease of use, and you can use the second SD card in other devices with a similar setup. Gripes aside about the RK3566 being 6-12 months late to the scene… this ain’t a bad looking device. In the Game Settings section, you can adjust configurations such as the overall aspect ratio and integer scaling. If you are just starting out, I recommend using the default options. One exception is the “Auto Save/Load” option. I recommend setting this to “Show saves when not empty”. This will automatically save your game when you exit, and if there is an auto-save associated with your game when you start it, you will have the option to select that auto-save or start the game from the beginning.

A number of Bluetooth controllers will work with this device, but I have found that the 8bitDo SN30 Pro is a nicely-built controller with wide compatibility. The X55 is a Linux handheld, with a simple OS allowing you to get straight into the action whilst still being able to tinker with things if you want. I always test any handheld with a straight out of the box setup as not everyone is technically minded will want to mess about with the settings just to get the games to work. I’m pleased to say that the X55 is fairly decent straight out of the box. The sound quality from the stereo speakers is very good, and the X55 has to be one of the loudest laptops on the market. Fortunately, it is not only loud, but also crisp and clear. Emulation and games So when a new device like this drops, and it’s only spec’d out to play some (not all) Game Cube and PS2 titles… we scoff.
