Rats are notorious stowaways that migrated around the world along with humans; today they live wherever Homo sapiens are found, on every continent except Antarctica. Rats are not just an inescapable feature of city living: In some ecosystems, particularly on islands, the invasive arrivals have wreaked havoc on bird and reptile populations by devouring eggs and young, driving many species to extinction. Diet and habitat I have given this 4 stars and did really enjoy this and I know in the future I would like to read this again, however there were a few points I would have liked adjusted. At a time of soaring corporate profits and plenty of HR lip service about "wellness," millions of workers--in virtually every industry--are deeply unhappy. Why did work become so miserable? Who is responsible? And does any company have a model for doing it right?

This is British, but not overly British. He does use the often never used word in London, THE, even in the title. The Brits do not go to The University or The Hospital, the just go to University or Hospital, if it fits in their sedule, that is. The latter is the subject of Robert Sullivan’s eye opening book about the pest everyone loves to hate.General Ishii also practiced vivisection on live humans. He was never tried for war crimes, apparently having made a deal with the Americans who got copies of his notes and papers which formed the basis for the early American attempts at creating biological weapons. To repeat, all of the above is worthy of outrage. However, if your outrage causes you to write a book full of outrage (plus occasional sarcasm), then you have failed as a writer, because those whose minds you are attempting to change will use your emotional in-print outbursts as evidence of unreliability. You will seen to be yet another screamer in an age of screaming, and will be disregarded by many people who may otherwise be sympathetic to your argument. Have confidence in your readers: they can recognize idiocy and injustice when plainly presented. In addition, the author is at pains to tell us that he does not like rats and thinks they're disgusting. He exhibits a strange squeamishness, even after spending many hours watching rats. As someone who does feel a level of compassion and interest in rats as animals, I found his attitude tiresome. He seemed concerned that the audience might actually think he liked his subjects. Needless to say, I don't recommend this book at all to anyone of any age. The gory parts were cool, but the parts with the whiny kids and the ineffective adults more than canceled that out.But it was entertaining and the rats were sweet, I've got the second in the rats story and I'll be on it soon.

Because this is a young adult novel, the main characters are teenagers, the son and daughter of the widowed landfill director. When the rats start coming up through toilets and other pipes, they know something is wrong. What follows is a confusing and nearly unreadable mess that I'm not sure I would have even been terribly interested in as a 14-year-old boy. Plot lines show up and then are dropped. Things are never adequately explained. There's some business with their pet rat Surfer - does he or does he not communicate with the rats? The world may never know. The problem is that a venture capitalist writing a book about how companies should treat employees is like Ted Bundy offering dating advice to young women. (c)

Creative Play

To me these sessions sound like a waking nightmare, like a cross between an away day and group therapy, with the added insult of toys. (c) Do you like rats? Well, you are certainly not going to love them more after this one. Nasty, gruesome, gory, just excellent. A few anticlimactic chapters, but other than that. Ratness perfection. It's everything you can expect from a rat horror novel. And then add some! As a result, although I knew the ideas in this book were worthy of attention, I frequently put it aside and it lingered a long time on my Goodreads “currently-reading” shelf as I enjoyed books, some on serious topics, written by authors who did not seem like they were shouting at me off the screen of my ebook reader. Seriously, can you imagine the city of London being infested with large deadly rats that like to eat humans and animals?! Eek, eek!!
