About this deal

In our fifty years of research and work with schools, we have long known the benefits for all children of making reading for pleasure a core part of the curriculum for all children. In July, the update to the DfE Reading Framework was published, and we are pleased to see this recognised more fully in this revised version, alongside the continued emphasis on phonics to support decoding.

The author John Green said it best: "Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood." Press the green A button again until you see ‘Rate 01 Act Imp’ - this is usually your night or ‘off-peak’ reading Take part in a book-themed fundraiser with your friends or colleagues. Take a look at our fundraising ideas to help you get started. We do spend on movies and music, but why? It is for entertainment, isn’t it? Then why not simply read books with the same purpose? You would be surprised to know that some of your favorite movies or TV series were made after getting inspiration from some of the greatest novels. Another one of the benefits of reading books is that they can improve our ability to empathize with others. And empathy has many benefits – it can reduce stress , improve our relationships, and inform our moral compasses.

Time-limit interventions and balance what other learning is lost with what will be gained when deciding how and when these take place. Similarly, whenever you read a novel, you have to remember tons of information about the story's plot and subplots, the characters and their relationships, and the environment in which the story takes place. Model how a skilled reader draws on the range of comprehension strategies required to make meaning from a text rather than focussing on one domain in isolation. Comprehension is an outcome, not a skill to practise, and so it does not make sense to divide up the elements of skilled reading and teach them separately. In supporting older early readers, teachers are still advised to use systematic, synthetic phonics as the prime approach. Our whole curriculum is based around the Power of Reading’s high-quality texts. These texts have exposed our children to a variety of topics to improve their knowledge of the world around them, and challenge issues they face in day-to-day life. Each classroom also has an immersive area where children can become the characters in the text and begin to emphasise and infer their thoughts and feelings. This has significantly raised the engagement levels of our pupils, which has been evidenced through pupil-voice interviews.Developing oracy is a priority. Teachers should plan for all children to be included and active participants in reading sessions and in the wider curriculum, creating dialogic classrooms. However, the emphasis on paired talk gives the impression that collaborative learning is unnecessary for language development. Well-designed collaborative learning approaches are proven to increase progress and necessitate the development and use of different types of language. Your meter will have one button which says ‘reconnect’ and another button which says ‘display’ or ‘display select’. The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) is an independent UK charity dedicated to raising the literacy achievement of children by putting quality literature at the heart of all learning. Established in 1972, our knowledge and expertise is rooted in a rich history and we continue to lead current thinking and practice in the teaching of literacy in primary schools. We provide a wide range of professional literacy training at our Centre in London and across the country. Since the onset of civilization, we have grown and developed mentally. Many learned scholars give credit to the erudite tomes written by our predecessors for our knowledge. The importance of reading books is now more than ever since. Not everything is available in digitalized form.

Wilson RS, et al. (2013). Life-span cognitive activity, neuropathologic burden, and cognitive aging.DOI:A 12-year study on health and retirement found that those who read books survived around two years longer than those who didn't read books or read magazines and other forms of media. Additionally, those who read for 30 minutes a day (3.5 hours per week) were 23% more likely to outlive those who didn't read often. When we read well-written work, we naturally observe its writing style, cadence, and composition. These characteristics inevitably seep into our writing, in the same way that musicians are influenced by each other.

Working with public libraries, prisons, hospitals and other community settings, we reach over two million people a year. But with a UK population of over 67 million that's not nearly enough. This is my first year using CLPE planning and I have to say that I feel that my English teaching has greatly improved. I am more enthusiastic in my teaching, my pupils have become more engaged, and there is far more speaking, listening, vocabulary, drama, role-play, art and writing woven throughout my teaching. The lesson plans are detailed, and enable effective teaching to take place. Our pupils have all benefited from the experience. The plans put quality children’s literature at the heart of English lessons and the texts and approaches used support schools in building a culture of Reading for Pleasure through recommendations for texts, ideas for enhancing the reading environment and ways to immerse children in the world of texts, engaging them in a love of reading and encouraging them to read more independently. Each set of notes contains five simple activities which will develop children’s comprehension skills and strategies and develop their imagination and creativity for writing. Built on 50 years of CLPE’s research, the Power of Reading explores the impact high-quality literature has on children’s engagement and attainment as readers and the link between reading and children’s writing development, supported by creative teaching approaches to develop a whole-school curriculum, which fosters a love of reading and writing to raise achievement in literacy.
