About this deal

The only downside was that the fairly widely spaced grill meant we lost a few peppers from our halloumi and roasted vegetable skewers into the BBQ interior – and once lost it was impossible to get them out. Danielle Centoni is the author of five cookbooks and a writer and product tester for The Spruce Eats. She also tested one of the most popular kamado grills on this list. Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty and self-cleaning abilities, both perks that help it stand out from the BBQ crowd. Why is the Big Green Egg so expensive? The decision to buy a kamado grill will change grilling forever. Kamado grills have been around for thousands of years and provide an ideal way to cook. What Brands Make Kamado Grills? Of course, one question remains – is it worth the hype (and the investment)? Our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute put the classic large Big Green Egg to the test to find out. Let’s take a closer look at this rising BBQ star and find out why it’s the ultimate alfresco must-have. What's special about the Big Green Egg?

Foodies love them for the superb-tasting food they produce and the versatility of how they can be used. The only downer is the price, although a high-end gas barbecue doesn't cost much less. We are not liable for any delay or default in Big Green Egg’s performance under the Warranty caused by any event or contingency beyond our control, including, without limitation, acts of God, war, government restrictions or restraints, strikes, fire, floods, transportation delays or reduced supply of materials. To control the temperature of a kamado grill, you have to adjust the vents at the top and bottom of the cooking chamber. For high temperatures, you'll want to open the vents more to let oxygen into the grill, and for low temperature, keep the vents partially closed.

Very. In fact, the fuss-free clean-up was one of our favourite things about it. For the Big Green Egg to ‘self-clean’, you simply fire it up as normal, close the dome and let it burn at 300C for a solid 20 minutes. Any leftover food scraps will be burnt to ash, ready for you to collect from the fire grate through the draft door at the bottom. Just be sure to leave the vents open while cleaning is in progress. Scoring a mighty 96/100 overall, it’s safe to say that our expert was thoroughly impressed by this charcoal cooker. Let’s find out why. The pros We tasked our Lab's Editorial Project Manager John Somerall with putting this new release through its paces. John has more than 10 years of professional culinary experience and is a year-round griller who fires up a grill at least once a week. After using it consistently for over a month, he's a fan: "I'd never used a smart charcoal grill before, but if this is the future of charcoal grilling, then the future is looking very bright!" It took 25 minutes for the BBQ to reach 250 degrees, with the in-built thermometer in the lid making it an easy job to watch the temperature rise. Although, after a typical British downpour we did find there was fogging on the thermometer dial after the rain.

Ease of use is where this grill really shines. The automatic starter is a game-changer and the temperature-regulating features—Kontrol Fan that automatically maintains temperature and Kontrol Tower top vent for consistent air setting during dome opening and closing—make this a super accessible option for beginners. When one of our testers brought this home for more long-term extensive testing, he noted that his wife, who is relatively new to grilling, found that this model eased her anxiety, and it's made its way into weeknight use because of the efficiency factor. Next, you need to add a fire starter followed by a few more charcoal pieces on top – a charcoal garnish for your firelighter, if you will. Open the draft door fully for 10 minutes and wait for your charcoal to glow. Then it’s time to open the other vent, aptly named the ‘reggulator’ and – patience please – wait up to five minutes for your Egg to be sufficiently heated. Finally, add your cooking surface and you’re ready to start the art of barbecuing. What can you cook in it? It can also be used as a low and slow cooker – that means cooking with a low heat over a long period. This method is ideal for cooking BBQ favourites such as pork shoulder, lamb shank and brisket. Picture it – you light and load your Big Green Egg in the morning, leave it to do its thing and 12 hours later you have a showstopping piece of meat for your dinner party.Grilling felt pretty exciting compared to gas BBQ cooking, with plenty of smoke and sizzling, and all of our sausage and burger taste-testers were thoroughly impressed with the smokey charring that the Kamado Joe delivered. Overall, this grill is remarkably accurate when it comes to regulating a preset temperature, and we think the experience could only be improved with a few updates to the Konnected Joe Kontrol Board's firmware and the Kamado Joe app. Inspired by an Asian clay cooker called a ‘kamado’, the Big Green Egg is a charcoal grill that set out to "redefine barbecue" and took the grilling world by storm. It even has its own loyal fanbase called ‘Eggheads’. Shopping for a kamado grill is a challenge because there are many types and sizes of grills to choose between. Two of the most popular brands on the market are from Kamado Joe and The Big Green Egg. Today, we are going to explore the similarities and differences of these two smokers and help you determine which one will suit your cooking needs the best. What is a Kamado Style Grill? Kamado grills are popular for smoking for several reasons. First, thanks to their superior heat retention, they're able to smoke for a long time using just a small amount of charcoal. Further, they seal in moisture better than many other smokers, which keeps your meat from drying out. Their round shape also encourages smoke to circulate within the cooking chamber, infusing lots of flavor into your food.

This Limited Warranty is non-transferable. The Big Green Egg does not authorise any person or representative to make or assume for BGE any obligation or liability in connection with the sale of any EGG or BGE product. Known by many as the ultimate barbecue, Big Green Eggs really do live up to their reputation. The Big Green Egg is a kamado style ceramic BBQ capable of all types of cooking from grilling a burger, through to baking bread and roasting a whole Sunday Roast Dinner! To test performance using the automatic mode, we grilled veggies, a tomahawk steak, and brisket (long smoke). Zucchini, red onions, and corn all came out evenly charred and tender, but there were no defined grill marks. The steak came out with a nice sear and was unbelievably juicy, especially considering it was cooked to medium/medium+ after resting for 10 minutes. The sear was a deep brown with hints of gold around the caramelized fat caps, and the grill marks, while somewhat faint, were lightly charred. The brisket was incredibly juicy and retained its integrity when handled as nothing was falling apart or overly dry. The cubed pieces of brisket were then tossed in bourbon-infused bbq sauce and drizzled with honey before returning to the smoker to prepare the burnt ends. The finished burnt ends came out deeply caramelized—tender and juicy with a somewhat crisp exterior. It’s made of shuttle-quality ceramic that’s treated with a protective green glaze, and then baked at 1,300C for several hours. The brand is supremely confident in its craftsmanship, hence the lifetime warranty. Our GHI expert first assessed how easy the set-up instructions were to follow and then they got grilling.
