Keslassy, Elsa (28 February 2011). " 'Gods and Men,' 'Ghost Writer' top Cesars". Variety . Retrieved 1 March 2011.

If you know your Roman history well, this is one of those books that will further put faces on those divans. Clodius, the sexually voracious nobleman and senator, is put on trial, having been accused of enter a sacred women-only religious ritual to pursue Caesar’s wife. Cicero finds that he is caught up in the case, playing the reluctant star witness for the prosecution. He’s made quite a few enemies, and while Pompey, Caesar, and Crassus all grab at political power, he finds that he’s sown the seeds of his own downfall. In many ways an impressive piece of work, a kind of House of Cards in tongas, which offers a pain-free way of studying the demise of the Roman Republic, with Robert Harris weaving his narrative around the actual events of that period. Still, I have mixed feelings about the blurb claim on the front cover, that it is ”one of the great triumphs of contemporary historical literature”: if you open it believing that you’ll probably be disappointed. On the other hand, if you open it expecting to have a “good read”, then you’ll be fine.Harris stated that the proceeds from the book enabled him to buy a house in the countryside, where he still lives. [ citation needed] Enigma (1995) [ edit ] His brother Quintus gives him a much needed dressing down. ”Spare me your casuistry, Marcus. Nothing is ever uppermost in your mind except yourself. Your honor, your career, your interests---so that while other men go off to die, you sit behind with the elderly and the womenfolk, polishing your speeches and your pointless witticisms!” Será de un interés impagable dentro de mil años —le dije en un intento de mantener encendida la llama de su buen humor. Dictator, the third instalment in Robert Harris’s trilogy of novels following the rise and fall of the Roman statesman and orator Cicero, marks the culmination of 12 years of work and a remarkable literary achievement in the marshalling and distillation of the source material alone. Those turbulent years of the first century BC that saw the collapse of the Roman republic and the transition to empire remain one of the best-documented periods of classical history, and so many of Cicero’s writings have survived that Harris is able to blend his hero’s own words seamlessly with invented conversations to create a full-blooded and authentic portrait of this extraordinary politician and philosopher.

Octavian reveres Cicero and writes him often for advice, but then Cicero does one of those things he just can’t help doing...he gets witty. In describing Octavian to a friend who is worried about him taking over where his adopted father left off, he says, ”Perhaps he will. But we can deal with him later. He can be raised, praised, and erased.” The second novel in the Cicero trilogy, Lustrum, was published in October 2009. It was released in February 2010 in the US under the alternative title of Conspirata. [ citation needed] The Fear Index (2011) [ edit ] The novel is divided into two halves: Consul, about Cicero’s year as leader of the Senate and de facto ruler of Rome, and Pater Patriae, that details his severe fall from such mighty heights. The story centres around arch rival Catilina’s conspiracy to assassinate Cicero and its aftermath, spanning roughly five years in total (hence the title Lustrum, which is a period of five years, and the US/Italian title of this book, Conspirata). PMQ, short story in the collection Speaking with the Angel. London: Penguin, 2 November 2000 ISBN 978-0-14-029678-5The books are amazingly detailed and realized, with every peculiarity of Roman life and political system explored, and with so many similarities to our own society and political system. Cicero is a thoroughly engaging character, a self-made man who is heavily flawed and is often forced to compromise, a politician who fights with his wit and clever scheming. The depictions of well-known Roman figures such as Caesar, Marc Antony, and Octavian are similarly very well depicted. His second novel, Enigma, portrayed the breaking of the German Enigma cipher during the Second World War at Cambridge University and Bletchley Park. It was adapted as a film by writer Tom Stoppard, starring Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet, in 2001. [3] Archangel (1998) [ edit ] Harris has appeared on the BBC satirical panel game Have I Got News for You in episode three of the first series in 1990, and in episode four of the second series a year later. In the first he appeared as a last-minute replacement for the politician Roy Hattersley. On 12 October 2007, he made a third appearance on the programme, 17 years, to the day, after his first appearance. Since the gap between his second and third appearance was nearly 16 years, Harris enjoyed the distinction of the longest gap between two successive appearances in the show's history until Eddie Izzard appeared on 22 April 2016, [24] just under 20 years after his last appearance on Episode 5 of Series 11 (17 May 1996). Edwardes, Charlotte (7 February 2017). "Author Robert Harris on Donald Trump, Theresa May and the new super-elite". Evening Standard.
