About this deal

The integrated handle, castors and power cable storage allow you to easily manoeuvre it around to where it’s needed most. Safety features include overheat and tip over protection, and the power indicator ensures you know when the radiator is switched on. Standing knee-high, it can be plugged in anywhere, but you won’t be moving it around much: at 50kg, it takes two people to lift and does get very hot. The heat escapes from the vent at the top, making this a convection heater like many others, but after about half an hour the rest of the cast iron body heats up too, radiating warmth outwards for quite a while after it’s turned off. The 650W total heat output is ideal for rooms up to 10m² while the adjustable thermostat makes it easy to select a temperature to suit you. Consider the brand. We’ll go into more detail in a moment about brand and whether Russell Hobbs is your best option for Heating and cooling. But the point here is just to make sure you’re factoring in brand when considering the quality of a product. Some brands will be better known for quality than others, and no doubt some of the much higher quality brands will attract a higher price for their products.

However, central heating is suitable for heating all the rooms in your house together. Meanwhile, an oil-filled radiator is best suited for adjusting the temperature in any single room, whether that might be a bedroom, living room, conservatory, or garage.

Apart from the thermostat the only controls here are a three-step power dial and an old-fashioned 24-hour timer divided into 15-minute segments that you pull out for ‘on’ and push in for ‘off’. You may be surprised to hear that oil-filled radiators don’t burn oil as fuel. Instead, they store it in a reservoir where it’s heated and spreads heat in the room. That’s why you never have to refill it. For the same reason, they’re incredibly efficient because they convert almost all of the energy they consume into heat. The specification we have listed from Currys PC World for RUSSELL HOBBS RHOFR5002 Portable Oil-Filled Radiator is: Cold air setting Some fan heaters can help cool you down too. They're not nearly as effective as a dedicated air conditioner, but a light breeze of cold air is better than nothing.

A 1000-watt radiator running on its lowest setting will cost around 27p an hour, or 16p an hour (off-peak). Oil Filled–Oil filled radiators take time to warm up, but retain their heat for longer, and can be more energy efficient as they stay warm for a while after being turned off. If you’re sitting a few feet away from this not particularly handsome oil-filled radiator, initially it’s underwhelming. The oil takes a while to warm up, plinking and plonking as it goes, and the heat that slowly emerges from the top in a “chimney” effect goes up, not out. Over time, as cool air is drawn in from beneath due to convection, the whole room heats up, but in my test it took half an hour for the temperature monitor set ten feet away to register any rise at all. They also don’t dry out the air in your room as blower-equipped heaters do. To add the cherry on top of the cake, they don’t make any noise! And that isn’t all; they’re also incredibly safe because they have no exposed element, which could be a fire hazard. Read more on the benefits of running an oil-filled heater. Are oil-filled radiators cheaper to run than convector heaters?

The next step in the price analysis was to look at the average price you would typically expect to pay for Heating and cooling and as Currys PC World was selected for this review we’ve used them for gathering our information on the average price of Heating and cooling. If you were to try replacing the use of your central heating by putting an electric heater in each room, it will definitely end up costing much more.

Many fan heaters also have a cold air setting – they essentially double up as fans in the summer. While not as potent as air conditioners, it could save you having to fit both appliances into your house. How safe are portable electric heaters? These can still be bought, but they aren't as popular or widely available as fan or convector heaters. When the price of gas soars, a portable electric heater (sometimes known as a space heater) is worth considering. Used properly, with judicious use of the thermostat, they can be economical – particularly for heating bedrooms and for occasional use in the coldest parts of the house. “When gas prices are unaffordable they may help cut bills if used sparingly,” says Rob Bennett, technical service manager at Pimlico Plumbers. “But electricity is not exactly cheap at the moment either. So you’re looking for the most heating output from the lowest electricity usage.” Under current energy prices, a run-of-the-mill plug-in electric heater can cost approximately 40p to 65p per hour to run on full blast.Look at the table below to get an idea of the size oil radiator you’ll need to warm your room. These are the sizes in watts your heater will need to be to control your rooms temperature. Room Size

Please note some larger products are delivered to kerb-side (the street outside your home), it is at the drivers discretion if they can deliver the item to another location on the property.

Portable electric heaters use electricity, which costs 27.35p/kWh under the current energy price cap. Depending on how effective the heater is, they can take anything from 30 minutes to an hour to notably raise the temperature of a medium-sized room, so if you're only planning on using it until the room gets up to temperature, it will likely cost you between 28 and 55p. Try setting the thermostat to somewhere between 15°C and 20°C so you feel comfortable getting out of bed in the morning. Is it cheaper to run an oil-filled radiator than gas central heating?
