Matching the Blu-ray player with its sleek design, you’ll find that there’s a decent ergonomic layout for easy use. The remote can connect to the player via Bluetooth so it matters not if your player is out on show or hidden away, it will still work effortlessly. OK, so if the only effective difference is this additional port - why should I care for it ? Serious question btw ! It's a looooong time since I was TV / accessory hunting last (HDMI was just a jumble of letters in those days ), so I really don't see what this would give. The obvious assumption (which I am getting the idea is quite wrong) is that I can plug this into a soundbar & get better sound than a direct-to-TV HDMI connection with said TV having a soundbar connection. So if I am wrong in this assumption ... ???

In the box there is a power supply and the remote and an easy-to-follow instruction guide. If you leave the M9500 in its default settings it will automatically set its output to match the native resolution of your display. One of my main criticisms of the UBD-K8500 was its lightweight build quality, which compared unfavourably with Panasonic’s more robust players. The UBD-M9500 is slightly improved, but the plastic casing still has the air of a budget player – at this price I’d expect something a little more luxurious. The M9500 also lets you watch content taken on Gear 360 or YouTube 360 videos and control them with the player’s remote. You need to convert Gear 360 content on a Galaxy smartphone or PC first, and watch them via the USB port. Samsung have also given the menu system an update, keeping the easy to setup approach of the K8500 but adding a few new features as well. The basic menu layout is similar and crucially all of the key options default to their auto settings, which means that the player will just optimise the output automatically to match the capabilities of your display. What this means in practice is that the resolution, the frame rate, the HDR and the colour gamut will all be set by the player depending on the EDID information delivered by the display. Although you can select things like resolution and colour format separately we would simply recommended leaving the settings on Auto because the M9500 did an excellent job of optimising itself for all the displays with which we tested the player. However, one thing it won’t do is play 3D Blu-ray discs, which may reflect its dwindling popularity but won’t impress those with a large collection of 3D movies. It doesn’t play SACD or DVD-Audio discs either, both of which are supported by the Sony UBP-X800.Similarly, you don’t need to select the ‘Bitstream (Unprocessed)’ audio setting to make the M9500 output Dolby Atmos or DTS:X – it analyses your audio system and selects the correct mode automatically. Samsung has wisely switched to the Eden user interface (powered by the Tizen OS) introduced on its 2016 Smart TVs. As a result, the UBD-M9500 is a dream to use, offering greater flexibility and better-looking menus than the UBD-K8500.
Performance
Audio-wise, the digital-only output means sound quality is determined by the quality of your system, but streaming Bluetooth through the player from a Samsung Galaxy phone proved a novel and convenient feature. A Now Playing screen appears when the music plays, showing the relevant metadata and an animated EQ meter.
But if you prize convenience over reliability then there’s built-in Wi-Fi with support for 801.11ac. The side-mounted USB port allows you to play music, video and picture files.
