And the contents - the same contents as for the standard plaza (I now have four of the green shelves if anyone wants one!). The base has polystyrene fixed to the corners to help protect it and has arrived in tact. There are a lot of things that we love about this cage, but these are a few of the biggest benefits; I wouldn't saying it's too low for a Syrian, unless they just think a Syrian sized wheel wouldn't fit. It's about an inch lower than the hamster heaven though. What do you think? I think it could be fine for a Syrian, with the right wheel - it's a long 100cm cage. The wheel end wouldn't have any substrate but could be sectioned off. There are some advantages to lower cages - the rat sputniks hang lower and they can just climb into them . At the moment I have the base out of the box. It's clearly a deeper base, but surprisingly doesn't seem quite so enormous as I imagined. I plan to keep his layout the same as now, with the same items, but there will be more space so may add a couple more shelves and some more floor items. I actually have perspex panels already - to fit the 100cm cage so intend to use those (even though there will be the odd gap). These clear acrylic screens are custom made to fit a Savic Plaza and replace the wall bars that are supplied with the cage. The “Savic Plaza Complete Cage Screens” transform the look of your Savic Plaza making it look like there is nothing between you and your hamster.

Because the cage is so deep I could actually get quite a bit of my upper body through the front door! To arrange things inside the cage. The extra depth makes it a lot easier. There is a lot of scope for setting up, due to the size and it’s easy to fit quite a few large items in – like large shelves or houses, and other large items like cork logs and other large logs. And still have plenty of floorspace. Yes we could get her an even bigger cage for a lot of money, but what would stop her from chewing that? DH isn’t convinced that it’s the size of the cage that’s the problem, he thinks she just likes chewing & being out as she just sleeps during the day. It’s a really big cage. It’s obviously much larger than the Standard Savic Plaza cage but not overwhelmingly so and just feels like a larger Savic Plaza cage without being too large to handle. The contents seem to be the same as for the standard Savic Plaza. The same green shelf and ladder and the same Savic Rolly wheel, which isn’t big enough. Plus a bottle and bowl and small plastic house. I didn’t use any of the contents. The plastic house isn’t suitable for sleeping in (although a hamster might like it as a treat store perhaps). I already have a bottle and food dish and large wheel.

Well ventilated – the wire spacing of the upper section of this cage allows for good ventilation, which helps to keep your hamster healthy. Once it’s assembled it is fairly sturdy and the whole barred top can be lifted onto the base without much difficulty. If you enjoyed learning about the Savic Hamster Plaza and want to explore different cage options for your tiny critters, you may want to read about: As it's a cage upgrade, rather than preparing for a new hamster, I'll need to do the changeover and set up in one day. Mainly because I don't have room to have both cages set up at the same time! So at the moment it's just preparation for a set up day some time over the next week. ie waiting for the new shelf mainly. I already have quite a few items to use in the cage.

When it comes to the cage and its contents, it needs to have a dark nesting box shelter and a quiet, private place to hide - the more choice, the better, because hamsters are timid creatures and can easily be spooked. I would advise caution with the detolf because lots of people have found their Syrians were quite unhappy in it. It was popularised at a time when we didn't know as much about what hamsters need, but now we know that they need a good few inches of bedding for burrowing, which the detolf just can't provide in addition to a wheel and some tallish toys. It's just too low. It's also too narrow. Syrians don't like living in a narrow cage, it feels too restrictive. It's always better to judge a cage by its dimensions, not by how many square inches of floor space it has. Syrian hamster: They are also known as Golden hamsters and are large and solitary. Syrian hamsters are the most popular breed to keep as a pet as they are easy to handle. Russian dwarf hamster: Similar to a winter white, Russian dwarf hamsters are also small but not as easy to handle. They make good pets and have a life span of around two years.

There are larger plastic cages too, like the Barney and Savic Plaza, but it's possible she'll try to chew those too. I think more space will really help, but she may already have formed a habit that won't go away completely. Make sure her chewing is never rewarded or reinforced. If she's chewing the cage, don't take her out. Wait until she stops, then take her out to play. These cage screens are custom made to fit round a Savic Plaza. They can be useful if you have a problem with draughts, want to prevent bar biting, or want to create an area of deep bedding. The screens are made from crystal clear Perspex/acrylic and are available in 4 different heights to suit your needs. They are specifically designed for the Plaza to include cut-outs for the end clips which hold the cage onto the base and also for the door clips.

Viking Laser said they are planning to make their Perspex panels for the Plaza 120 - either full height or part height – once they have the cage in front of them to make a template. Perspex panels aren’t cheap though – I’d rather use cardboard for that reason (which I’ve done in Pip the Robo’s cage because he doesn’t chew cardboard!). But it does mean that if someone wanted to turn it into a Perspex tank – it’s possible. It would make it an expensive cage that way though – with the cost of the cage plus the cost of the Perspex. But still cheaper than a glass tank probably.
