About this deal

Considerable scientific inquiry has been carried out by the Marine Mammal Center and other research organizations beginning in the 1980s regarding the incidence and transmission of diseases in harbor seals in the wild, including analysis of phocine herpesvirus. [28] In San Francisco Bay, some harbor seals are fully or partially reddish in color, possibly caused by an accumulation of trace elements such as iron or selenium in the ocean, or a change in the hair follicles. [29] Unlike otariids, true seals do not communicate by 'barking'. Instead, they communicate by slapping the water and grunting. This lost elephant seal symbolizes what can happen when an animal’s actions are on the extreme side of its species’ behavioral range. If some seals were already likely to swim very far upriver and get lost during times with less environmental stress, who knows how many of them might do so under extreme environmental upheaval.

Landmarks 15, 34, and 35 (on the orbit and pterygoid hamular) in harbor seals were at the more posterior location than those of the spotted seals (Figure 4a, b). Landmark 28 (molar) in harbor seals was located more on the buccal compared with the spotted seals (Figure 4b). In comparison to many pinniped species, and in contrast to otariid pinnipeds, harbor seals are generally regarded to be more vocally reticent. However, they do utilize non-harmonic vocalizations to maintain breeding territories and to attract mates during specified times of year, [18] and also during mother and pup interactions. [19]

What are the differences between a bone and a fossil?

I thought, I don’t see half of these animals, and they’re amazing. Who else doesn’t see these animals? Because we’ve got no natural history museum down here where you can take kids to – or for anybody, not just children. So, I got my licence to collect cetacean bones in 2019, and started from there." Although some of the largest harbor seal pupping areas are found in California, they are also found north along the Pacific Coast in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. Large populations move with the season south along the west coast of Canada and may winter on the islands in Washington and Oregon. Pupping is known to occur in both Washington and Oregon as of 2020. People are advised to stay at least 50m away from harbor seals that have hauled out on land, especially the pups, as mothers will abandon them if there's too much human activity nearby. When traveling long distances, sea lions are known to employ a swimming technique called porpoising. As the sea lion dashes across the sea surface it breaches the surface in a series of consecutive leaps. This technique is likely used to increase their speed, since air resistance is significantly less than the drag of water. Seals, too, have key adaptations that make them efficient swimmers, like lots of blubber to make them buoyant. When at sea, northern elephant seals spend 85 to 95 percent of that time underwater and make massive migrations up to 13,000 miles long. Today, many of the species that roamed inland from Saldanha Bay on the southwest coast of South Africa are extinct. There are some exceptions, including the earless, also known as true seal (phocid) seals. They flourish in great numbers in other parts of the world, but they no longer inhabit the west coast of South Africa – though they do appear from time to time as vagrants visiting from the Antarctic.

Both Southern and Northern elephant seals suffered from extreme hunting in the 1800s. Today, they face another obstacle: climate change. But by learning more about the species’ range of behavior in the past, scientists can better predict the many ways they could react to global challenges now.
