In an effort to establish some context, I think it's important to note that I love both Mario Tennis and Virtua Tennis – and for two entirely different reasons. Mario Tennis for its colorful presentation and speedy, responsive controls and Virtua Tennis for its realistic visuals and deep controls, not to mention the strategy that's buried within. And yet, seemingly against all the odds, I don't love SEGA Superstars Tennis and this is because it teeters somewhere in the middle of the two, excelling neither at being an arcade game of tennis nor a simulation. And also because despite all of the colorful mascots featured in the game, it still feels sterile – really short on charm and charisma. Reala: All Round type - Reala's Superstar state, Nightmare, makes the ball paraloop and upon returning the ball causes the opponent to spin on the spot being unable to move momentarily.

MeeMee: Spin type - Her Superstar state, Flower Power, makes the ball circle in a flower shape before GonGon, Baby and YanYan appear on the opponents side of the court in Monkey Balls, running them down. Thing is, I don't hate it either. In fact, the Wii remote controls work pretty well, the selection of characters and courts is sure to please most SEGA fans, and while the volleys aren't nearly as deep or as strategic as they are in Virtua Tennis, they can still be enjoyable, particularly with multiple human players. Minigames are included as both one-offs and part of the tournament. These include a Target-hitting game, The House of the Dead zombie killing game (hit moving zombies around a court before the timer runs out), a Space Harrier game, a Puyo Puyo game, a Virtua Cop game and a Samba De Amigo-related game. It also feels like the team has stripped down the simulation aspect of Virtua Tennis in favor of a design that'd appeal to players who might be turned off by a realistic take of tennis. That's not to say that SEGA Superstars Tennis doesn't play like tennis; it definitely does. You can place hard shots, lobs, play the net and overhand smash the ball with a well positioned shot. You can aim your serves tight or loose to the line to ace your opponent. You can dive for an out of reach ball, even if the animation plays out the character's personality (Sonic does a forward flip instead of sliding to the ball, for example). Amigo: Power type - His Superstar state, Maraca Madness, makes his shots curve at wild angles and lay down three maracas on the opponents court. If the opponent touches these they start dancing uncontrollably. SEGA Superstars Tennis was ported to MAC along with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. However, SEGA Superstars Tennis was never released on PC. Each of the 16 characters has a special superstar alter-ego. These super abilities give them the winning edge on the court.

Each character has a special move to aid them with their tennis match, relating to the character. For example, Beat from Jet Set Radio has a power that allows the ball to grind against the net and shoot off at a random point, making it difficult to return.
