About this deal

You can easily measure your foot length using an A4 sheet of paper, placed on the floor against a wall. Stand with one foot on the piece of paper, with your heel against the wall. Draw a line above your big toe (or above the index toe if that is longer). Now mark your other foot on the paper in the same way. Measure both - the measurement of your longest foot is your foot length in mm's! Please note: some manufacturers have their own measuring system, and as a result what appears on the shoebox can deviate from what we have measured.

That way, you’ll reduce unintentional skidding and the resultant reduction in braking power and bike control. The tubes come out of the brakes at a fixed angle and the tubing for the rear brake is 1,700mm, which might not be long enough for the most progressive downhill or enduro bikes.

How to burp-bleed Shimano disc brakes

The Deore brake calipers from the current (M6100) and previous several generations (M6000, M615) have not changed much — they use two resin pistons and the newer pad design (though the M6100 hose routing is improved compared with previous generations). However, a new option is the M6120 4-piston caliper, which is identical to the MT520 caliper. Stiff and lightweight 2-piece caliper with opposed pistons in two diameters to reduce pad wear and increases control Shimano rotors are available in 140mm, 160mm, 180mm and 203mm sizes. Typically 140mm is only used on road bikes, 160mm is a ‘standard’ size, 180mm is a popular upgrade for bikes used in harder offroad conditions (sometimes 180mm front, 160mm rear), and 203mm is used for downhill MTBs. A bike with 160mm rotors can be switched to 180mm, though this will require an adapter for the caliper. Larger rotors provide more braking force. XTR shifters use carbon fibre rather than GFRP, and are about 10 grams lighter. For most people this is not a concern, and Deore XT is already excellent. rear derailleurs branded Tourney are somewhat crudely constructed, while those branded Altus/Acera/Alivio will tend to be slightly better. Note that the M4000/M3100/M3000/M2000 rear derailleurs use Shimano’s Shadow design, which is slightly more durable than older designs, but this is in any case not that important as they can be replaced easily.

The SLX and Deore XT calipers are identical to each other, while the XTR one may be a few grams lighter, but functions the same. Comparing them to Deore, the difference is the use of the banjo joint to connect the caliper, while the 2-piston design also gets the addition of ceramic pistons (which are already on the Deore 4-piston calipers). We then wanted to get a bit more specific and only look at Shimano products that are listed in the Brakes category. The lever’s hinged clamp is compatible with Hope’s Tech 3 mounts, so Shimano and SRAM shifters can be attached. The carbon fibre lever blade also has reach adjustment accessed with an Allen key, but doesn’t have bite adjustment like some other high-end XC brakes.

The lever has a flip-flop design and reach adjustment, and Magura offers different lever blade types, which can alter the interface between finger and brake. The single-finger design we tested gave a reasonably sharp initial bite and in the mid-stroke it offered plenty of modulation. Sub-Deore level brakes, yet plenty of stopping power from Shimano. Russell Burton / Immediate MediaNote: Weights and prices are for a single brake (ca liper, hose and lever, but no rotor or adaptor, unless otherwise stated). Also on test Some brakes come with four pistons in the caliper and others with two pistons. Four pistons offer more braking power but can increase weight. The lever is highly versatile. It can be used on either side of your handlebar and comes with a detachable hinged bar clamp. It also has tool-free adjustment for the lever position and bite point. Inside, a large reservoir helps increase heat resistance. The shifters from Altus to XTR are all ‘Rapidfire’, which refers to the position of the shift levers. However there are differences in the implementation of this. The Formula Cura is a classy-looking two-piston brake that’s well suited to light and fast trail mountain bikes and downcountry bikes.
