Sigma Announces New 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art Zoom Lens for Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras; Available in Sony E-mount and L-mount When looking more closely at the results, we can see that Sigma has gone to great lengths to achieve a more consistent level of sharpness, particularly wide-open at f/2.8. Even so, while the Art series lens consistently beats both the earlier EX model and the pricier Nikkor lens, we noticed some astigmatism (where the horizontal and vertical acutance lines aren’t always close) at 24mm, and sharpness levels drop at 70mm.

The graph below shows the degree of corner shading visible in images from the three lenses at their longest focal length and widest aperture (when it will be most noticeable).Image quality is simply sumptuous. Sharpness and contrast are excellent throughout the entire zoom range, even at the widest aperture of f/2.8. The only noticeable dip in sharpness is at the extreme edges of the image frame, when shooting wide-open at 24mm. Ultimately, the Sigma is every bit as sharp as the Canon and Nikon own-brand lenses, and draws ahead of the Tamron at the long end of the zoom range. Catching a strong light-source shining directly into the lens is always a risky business: it could produce strange colorful ghost-images or reduce contrast considerably through flare and glare. The appearance of flare and ghosting depends on factors like the aperture and the angle of the light hitting the lens. To judge the proclivity of the new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art for these artifacts I went through a series of well calculated shots against a strong light source to provoke glare and ghosting. All of the high-volume lens makers (including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Tamron and Sigma) make one, and a big population of photographers has or wants one.

This is my first lens after my initial kit lens, of course it is a massive difference but that don't mean I have to kiss it's ass, there are negatives to this lens too. The new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art has its share of ghost and flare artifacts. At the short end it’s not too bothersome but at the long end it’s more pronounced. Have a look at the following comparison with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III: Still, my lens is front-focusing slightly on my 5D Mark III at 24mm and showing some slight focus inconsistency at 70mm.Same story at 35mm: While the four lenses are almost indistinguishable at f2.8 in the center, the Sigma ekes out a slight advantage in the APS-C- and FF-corner over the Tamron and Nikon. The Sony has the sharpest FF-corner. Let’s start these conclusions off right. The Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL is Sigma’s optics with Leica’s everything else. Leica’s motor inside this lens is high-speed. It’s faster than Sigma’s. The Leica exterior is made of metal, and it’s overall superior to Sigma’s. Except for Canon, pretty much every brand has an issue with heavy 24-70mm lenses. So you’ll need to just expect that when using it. If you consider the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens to be an f/4 max aperture lens, then I think you will be pleased with the image quality it delivers. This isn’t a critique of the town of Wetlzar — but more of a reality of the world’s infrastructure and how it affects the quality of a product. Perhaps Leica should consider moving repairs to Portugal — a place with far more young people trying to escape the world’s economic hardships. Sure, the product can be made in Germany. But if the repair center is located in Portugal, I’d be perfectly fine with that if it just worked. It’s a rather toxic viewpoint to require that it be fixed in Germany is the infrastructure isn’t necessarily there. After all, these repair and technical issues are the cause of why we made the update to this review in the first place.
