And as a result, it was often true that those of us with the privilege of that technical training—usually western, white, men like myself—got to go tell the stories from “far-off” places. And, likewise, distribution of those photographs was specialized and rarefied, limited to books and magazines and eventually the earliest derivative internet publications. But over time—and in the last 10 years especially—with the introduction of smart phones and the explosion of the internet and social media, we have seen the barriers to doing and sharing photography almost completely disappear. And I love it.
