About this deal

One of the main reasons for Sparta’s military success was their organization and tactical awareness in battle. This can be seen most clearly in their battle formation – the phalanx. The phalanx was a rectangular formation, which lined up the men and their weapons so closely that it was impossible for the enemy to penetrate their lines. Spears, Betty (1984). By the time they fought their first battle, they were as hard as the bronze armor they wore for protection, and so the Spartan system created courageous soldiers who gladly gave their lives in battle The more worldly Athenians even joked about it, saying that living conditions in Sparta were so bad that of course they’d sacrifice themselves! Ancient Sparta was a society of contrasts, one in which the qualities of loyalty and equality among the few were heavily dependent on the enslavement of the many. One of the many consequences of this separation was that trade routes were shut down and imported goods gradually ceased. With no external creative influence, the quality of Spartan craftsmanship suffered greatly and, arguably, never fully recovered. Greek women were allowed to compete in the same festivals as men after the classical period. Bronze Statuette of Athletic Spartan Girl The new Spartan statue was unveiled to a crowd of hundreds during Welcome Week on August 25, 2005.The statue was not supposed to be unveiled until the dedication ceremony in October 2005, but the artists warned that the condensation from leaving Sparty covered could cause discoloration of the statue’s exterior. For that reason alone, Sparty was unveiled early. The official dedication ceremony still took place October 8, 2005. The Bronze Statuettes of Athletic Spartan Girl are bronze figurines depicting a Spartan young woman wearing a short tunic in a presumably running pose. These statuettes are considered Spartan manufacture dating from the 6th century B.C., [1] and they were used as decorative attachments to ritual vessels as votive dedications, such as a cauldron, [2] suggested by the bronze rivet on their feet. [3] The figures typically have their hair hung down, right arm slightly bent, left hand lifted the hem of the chiton skirt and expose part of the left thigh, likely to facilitate the movement, and their legs in a wide stride. The piece from the National Archaeological Museum in Athens is wearing a bodice of the chiton, which covers both shoulders and breasts, representing the running costume for girls at local ritual festivals in Sparta. Spartans believed that these social changes were introduced by a law-maker named Lycurgus. Lycurgus is a mysterious figure and no definitive details about him are known. Many historians surmise that there was a leader who implemented radical reforms at some point in the 7 th century BC and that he gradually developed into a figure of legend.
