For gamers, the 5-Series adds in VRR and ALLM support, too, though it’ll only do 4K/60Hz. All told, the 5-Series upgrades image quality, audio, and gaming performance in key areas over the 4-Series.
It doesn’t have the ‘Pro’ status of those before it, but it does come with a Game Master set-up with 120Hz and VRR, ALLM, Stadia certification and most of the trimmings (although FreeSync is limited to the 55-inch model and above). However, it could also be the last in this list to offer genuine high-quality HDMI 2.1 support, so if that’s a key factor for you, then this could be your best affordable option. Screen uniformity isn’t the strongest either, with clouding in the corners of Bad Times at the El Royale (4K HDR10+) via a 4K Blu-ray player. It’s less of a problem during the day, but becomes fairly evident when light levels in a room start to drop. Viewing angles are better than most at this price – although, inevitably, colours lose their punchiness and brightness the wider you are. On the left there’s a choice of Freeview Play, streaming channels and the settings menu, plus a search function and the ability to save custom lists. Over on the right you can access any connected devices and live TV, along with all the apps. There’s sufficient processing power to ensure the Roku platform is responsive, but it’s also intuitive to use and easy to navigate. On Skyfall (4K Dolby Vision), colours are expressive, detail levels are great, and the TV digs up the fine detail in close ups of Craig’s hair and scars.
