What I was unprepared for, however, was the perfect plotting, convincing characters, and one thoroughly epic game of cat-and-mouse. Holly Hunter as Tammy Hemphill, Eddie's chain-smoking secretary and lover who aids Mitch in copying and stealing the files in Memphis and the Cayman Islands This book irritated me a lot. I can definitely see the appeal, as it is usually fast paced and pretty exciting. I just could not buy into the setup of the book, and never once identified with the main character, Mitch McDeere. I felt like every single thing he did in the book, I would do differently. Tried, yes, but got nowhere. The State fought us at every turn and the courts had no sympathy. We tried everything, and we had a fighting chance a few months ago when he decided to fire his legal team. Not a smart move.”

But then his wife said - “ah, no, just some empty envelope was delivered.” I always don't recycle them but lay down for my husband to see them. When I was reading this scene I imagined countless men reading this chapter and thinking about their wives and mistresses and being frightened vicariously through Mitch.

A small, by New York standards, legal firm in Memphis woes Mitch to join the firm. The money being offered is well above what other bigger and more prestigious firms are offering. So with this carrot in front of him Mitch joins the firm. Mitch obviously hasn’t heard the expression “if it sounds too good to be true it most likely is”. So much for his high IQ. Mitch's decision to work with the Moroltos angers the FBI, but he reminds them that the evidence he has provided is enough to make a RICO case and ensure that the firm's senior members go to prison for a long time. The film ends with the McDeeres returning to Boston in their old car. Ray, now with Tammy, enjoys his new life in the Caymans with the money Mitch obtained for him. He looked good, on paper. He was their top choice. In fact, for this year there were no other prospects. The list was very short. It was McDeere or no one. Thought I'd never get to the end of this epic Grisham novel. I think this is one of his earlier efforts and I remember watching the film a long time ago.

There were some flies in the ointment, however. First off, it was obvious that this was written by a man in the very early 90s. With plenty of skirt chasing that included some rather sexist descriptions as well as an all too unenlightened view on race, the white, elite, Southern views rolled off of this one in spades. Granted, those were the kinds of individuals this plot centered around, but the book didn’t have to adopt them as well. I’m hoping that had it been written today, much of that would’ve been toned down. But then, you never really know, do you?

It’s too easy a target. Mitch, Abby and Ray manage to escape to the Cayman Islands with the help of Barry Abanks, a scuba diving business owner from the islands whose son died in the incident which killed Kozinski and Hodge. Armed with Mitch's evidence, the FBI indicts 51 present and former members of the Bendini firm, as well as 31 alleged members of the Morolto family, for everything from money laundering to mail fraud. As the book ends, Mitch, Abby and Ray enjoy their newfound wealth in the Cayman Islands. Principal photography took place from November 9, 1992, to March 20, 1993, and though it was primarily filmed in Memphis, Tennessee, some scenes were filmed in Marion, Arkansas, and the Cayman Islands.
