Garden-Themed Process Art: After reading the story, cut up some vegetables – be sure to include a turnip – and let your little ones paint a picture with veggie stamps. The Gigantic Turnip" or "The Enormous Turnip" ( Russian: Репка, Repka, Ukrainian: Ріпка, Ripka, IPA: [ˈrʲepkə], literally "small turnip"; ATU 2044, ‘Pulling up the turnip') is a cumulative Russian fairy tale and Ukrainian fairy tale, collected in Arkhangelsk Governorate and published in 1863 by folklore researcher Alexander Afanasyev in his collection Russian Fairy Tales (tale number 89), a collection not strictly Russian, but which included stories from Ukraine and Belarus alongside Russian tales. [1] [2] [3] The tale is also considered a Ukrainian fairy tale, [3] [4] well-known as adapted by Ivan Franko. [5] [6]

One of my new favorite spring books is The Enormous Turnip. It is an old folktale about a farmer who plants a turnip seed. The turnip grows so big that the farmer can’t harvest it himself. So, he enlists the help of friends and family in a story that points out the importance of teamwork. Gardening with Kids: There are so many benefits to gardening with kids. With this amazing collection of ideas and activities, your kids can learn about plants, try new foods, and tend their own garden spots. Versions of The Enormous Turnip Many skills can improve through colouring! By doing our large turnip colouring sheet, your child is going to improve their fine motor skills. They’ll also get better at hand eye coordination. This colourful PowerPoint is easy to read, simple to use and great fun for all your students. If they would prefer it in an eBook format, we also have that. There are plenty of Enormous Turnip Activities for Early Years that you can call in to help out, such as this Enormous Turnip Colouring Sheet. Other stories from TwinklVegetable Garden Watercolor Painting: This is a beautiful project for your artistic kids. It is a great way to highlight all of the parts of a vegetable, too. Spring is here, and we are so ready! Now is the time of year to start filling our book baskets with books about seeds, gardening, insects, and the like. Nutritionally, turnips have a great profile. Both the roots and leaves are a good source of vitamin C. Turnip greens are an excellent source of both vitamins A and K. My official rating would be 4 stars because the overall content is fairly slim, but the giggles it brought definitely earned it its 5 stars requested by my 7yo. 💜

When I teach book-based lessons, I love to dig in and discover other fun “rabbit trails” to follow. The Enormous Turnip is the perfect lead into discussions about seeds, gardening, farming, vegetables, healthy eating, teamwork, and more. Zer-Zion, Shelly (2019). A Vegetable-Themed Sensory Bin: Kids will love this fun sensory bin. You could use real or plastic vegetables in this one. Our colouring sheet resources are also great for hand-eye coordination. Your child will want to create the images in their head come to life on paper through colouring! Establishing and improving that connection is fundamental to a child’s development. What is a turnip? The old woman took hold of the old man, the old man took hold of the turnip. They pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So the old woman called over the granddaughter. The old man started to pull the turnip out of the ground. He pulled and pulled, but could not pull it out. So he called over his wife. The dog took hold of the granddaughter, the granddaughter took hold of the old woman, the old woman took hold of the old man, and the old man took hold of the turnip.
