Great plotting, great characters and at least two eye-widening twists I didn't see coming' Sophie Hannah I bought The People Next Door by Tony Parsons in Sainsbury’s a few months ago when I was short on books. But then it kept getting pushed to the bottom of the pile by books by favourite authors, including Robert Galbraith, Richard Osman and Kate Atkinson. Finishing this book last night, I was left musing about how I felt about the book. It was definitely addictive reading and kept me hooked. The parts which left me wondering, were, I felt, a little too far-fetched.

Parsons was for a time a regular guest on the BBC Two arts review programme The Late Show, and still appears infrequently on the successor Newsnight Review; he also briefly hosted a series on Channel 4 called Big Mouth. It then jumps into the paranoid "everyone is out to get me" with the wife spotting areas of concerns, finding bones in the garden, putting two and two together that sinister things are afoot. Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how disappointed I am after finishing this. I am a huge fan of Tony Parsons' books and have enjoyed a few of them but this just didn't do it for me in any way, shape or form and for that, I am extremely sad.
