Like, did he do something he maybe shouldn’t have? Yes. Is this a realistic depiction of being a sixteen-year-old whose hormones are working double time? Yes. And I think he proved numerous times that he isn’t a bad guy. He does the “right” thing over and over, even if he is suppressing his own happiness. Also, I’m always here for all the sex positive depictions. More unpopular opinion: I totally ship him with the unpopular one to ship him with. Muahahahaha! Fantasy Pantheon: The inhabitants of Fennbirn pray to the Goddess. The Queens are said to be descended from her.

The white-handed queen: The elementals and temple priestesses are very concerned that Mira will refuse to kill her sisters when the time comes, and debate making her a white-handed queen. A tradition brought about in generations past, a white-handed queen is crowned when a single sister is so strong, the others are unanimously captured and executed by mob rule. Natalia finds out about this plan and informs Pietyr, but swears him to secrecy. Billy’s dad, who has been conspiring with Natalia, and tells Billy about this plan in a bid to tempt him away from Arsinoe. Instead, Billy decides to sail away with Arsinoe to help her escape her fate.This book was supposed to be dark and mysterious so when did it turn into an angsty teen drama with insta-love and love triangles. NO I did not sign up for this. I HATE the whole Joseph drama that we have going on in this book so much I can’t even begin to explain it.

The writing felt a bit dry at the beginning and when I switched to audio, it felt a bit more lively! An Arm and a Leg: The priestess Rho plans to remove Katharine's and Arsinoe's arms and head and throw them into a sacrificial fire. Elizabeth loses a hand for enabling Mirabella to run away when the pressure to kill her sisters became too much. Madrigal Milone: Jules’s mom. She’s a naturalist, but is also a talented witch who can wield the frowned-upon low magic. Her relationship with Jules is… complicated.The love triangle: Over in Rolanth, Mirabella’s been having dreams that remind her how much she loved her sisters when they were younger. She decides, despite being the Temple’s frontrunner, that she can’t kill them. Her only option is to run away. But while she’s fleeing, she comes across a drowning Joseph Sandrin who ran into a storm at sea. She saves him with her elemental power and the two fall for each other instantly ( as if by low magic’s influence…) and end up hooking up. Of course, they get busted by Jules and Arsinoe, who have come to rescue Joseph, and Rho, the temple priestess who’s come to find Mirabella. The Beltane Festival begins in the Innisfuil Valley. Mirabella is with Bree and Elizabeth at the Westwoods’ tent and the girls talk about if Arsinoe is really gone as they have heard. In the Arrons’ encampment, Pietyr sneaks Katharine some food. They kiss but she can tell there is something different about his touch this time. She assumes it’s because she will have a king-consort soon. Pietyr takes Katharine to the Breccia Domain, the chasm where the dead queens' bodies are thrown. Katharine is fascinated by it, while Pietyr thinks it is morbid. They kiss again knowing they will have to keep their love for each other a secret. Arsinoe is a naturalist. She should be able to make flowers bloom, have control over animals, and have an animal familiar. She cannot do any of these things and is still waiting on her gift. Her best friend Jules has an extremely strong naturalist gift giving her a mountain cat as a familiar. Arsinoe tried to escape her fate years ago by running away, but the island wouldn’t let her go leading to the banishment of Jules’ boy. One of the best things about Arsinoe is her loyalty to her friends. I love that the power of friendship truly means something to her.
