There’s no doubt that Led Zeppelin’s Earls Court appearances represented a career high for the band and four decades on, are still held in the highest esteem by the vast following. Last Friday, it was a joy to invest in The Beatles White Album Giles Martin new stereo mix on vinyl on the day of release at the excellent Slide Record shop in Bedford…93 minutes of musical heaven awaited.

In May 1975, Led Zeppelin performed five momentous concerts at the Earls Court Arena in London to a combined audience of 85,000 fans. This was a band at the peak of their powers slaying the sold out audiences with a nightly marathon three and a half hour presentation of light, sound, power and energy. Another anniversary the Remasters releases all of 33 years old this week. I absolutely loved that period – it was so incredible to see the resurgence of interest that surrounded them – here’s some 33rd anniversary thoughts… The performance in the school’s Roxburgh Hall was also unique unusual for another reason: It was an all-boys attendance and all seated. Unlike a lot of their performance of the time there was not a scream to be heard. David Magnus, an assistant to the photographer Dezo Hoffman, took a number of photos of the event. We have all had a journey with this song over the years. Mine commenced on April 4 1971 when I heard it on my radio listening to Led Zeppelin’s BBC In Concert performance on Radio One’s John Peel show. I’d heard Jimmy in an interview describing how it had come together in various sections building to a climax. Sure enough this tentative version did just that.
