Tomato plants are thirsty plants. They need regular watering, which can lead to the soil becoming compacted and water running off before it’s had a chance to be absorbed. The solution? Make your own water reservoir ‘halos’. This idea is simple yet ingenious. Pop your ball of twine into a pot then feed the end through one of the drainage holes. Stretch duct tape over the top of the pot to stop the spool falling out. You now have a ready-to-use twine dispenser. Just pull from the bottom and cut off what you need. 5. Get Crafty This has a unique cane support system with slots surrounding the inner pot for your canes (not included) and a cane grip cap allows for up to 4 canes to be joined at the top to create a climbing structure. I previously grew tomatoes in pots but earlier this year, I decided to give the grow bags a try. Due to this change I invested in some tomato ‘grow bag' pots or ‘halos' from ‘Selections. com'. There are many other suppliers who provide these devices, and you can probably find them in your local nursery. Basically, they consist of a central planter in which the plant sits surrounded by a lower reservoir with holes in the base, allowing the water to drain into the soil as an when the soil dries sufficiently to require water. The central inner pot creates the planting area which is particularly useful when used with grow bags. It allows a deeper planting zone to develop healthier plants. A 2.8 litre outer ‘moat’ features eight 3cm watering spikes. These penetrate below the surface, delivering water direct to the plant’s roots. Water and liquid feed deliver at a reduced rate that the plant is better able to absorb, preventing wastage which is common with conventional watering.

To encourage root growth, Make sure you water regularly and, once flowers appear, feed weekly with a fertiliser to increase your crop. Our Plant Halos stimulate rapid root growth for healthier plants. They also cut down the need for watering and increase your crop yield. You can sink your Plant Halo(s) into a grow bag or into the ground if you have a traditional vegetable plot. Pots with a diameter of 26cm or above or raised beds can also be used. Like I said earlier, if you are going away for a couple of days, you can fill these right to the top and they will take a couple of days for the water to seep into the growbag behind. Stuff the pot with a selection of bamboo cane pieces, hollow stems, twigs or corrugated cardboard then perch the hotel on its side in a sheltered position. Or, attach a hook to the pot and hang it from a branch. 4. Make a Twine Dispenser

The halos have spikes on the bottom, so position them on the growbag (you should be able to fit 3 on there) and push them down onto the plastic to create holes. Lift the halo off and cut a circle with some scissors following the curve of the 6 holes you have just made. Remove the circle of plastic and use a garden hand fork to loosen the earth in the growbag to allow the roots of the tomatoes to grow down into it. These products are designed to channel water directly to a plant’s roots while also suppressing weeds and thwarting cutworms. All three products tested were easy to install, and we had no problems with weeds or cutworms (neither did any of the other plants, for that matter). And while all the other tomato plants relied on drip irrigation for their water, these required hand watering. This method of delivering water is notoriously unreliable, and it is probably what contributed to the performance of the plants in these devices being slightly below that of the control plants. Others believe that plant halos are unnecessary and that cucumbers will do just fine without them. Ultimately, it is up to the individual gardener to decide whether or not to use plant halos for their cucumbers.

Users of Plant Halos report that their yields increase, their plants look vibrant and healthy and that theirgrowbags don't dry out. Water your plants well to settle the soil. One of the benefits of using a plant halo or pot is that when you water the plant, water doesn’t run off the surface of the compost or flood the grow bag. Push it halfway into the soil, then plant your tomato plant. Now when you water your tomatoes the walls of the pot will contain the water and allow it to gradually soak into the soil. If using a plant halo, water only the inner pot for the first two weeks and once the plants become established and start to grow, then water into the outer ring where the holes are and the water will seep directly to the roots. The other great thing about plant halos is that, if you go away for a few days, you can fill the reservoir with water right to the top and it will then take a couple of days for the water to seep into the grow bag so you don’t have to worry about your plants drying out! We grew some plants (we chose ‘Cherokee Purple’) with the products and some without. No special care was given to any plant, and we used the products the way they were intended. By delivering water directly to plant roots, the Tomato Halo prevents weeds and cutworms while also providing plant roots with nutrients. You can use the tomato support in any way you want with the versatile design. A Tomato Cage can be found around the Halo’s built-in support channels, or a Tomato Ladder can be found in the built-in support channels. There are several ways to plant it, including in a raised bed, a container, or right in the garden. It is necessary to add a large amount of water to the inner pot to help the soil settle and encourage root growth. You can use water-soluble fertilizers such as Plant Health Care on a regular basis. The one season extender that was different was the Pop-up tomato accelerator. Rather than using water to insulate, it uses plastic. It was much easier to set up, but it has a zippered top that needs to be opened or closed to keep or reduce heat. That requires a smidge of extra effort. It is also much bigger than the others, which, we think, made it harder to keep warm. Its performance lagged a bit behind that of the others, but not enough to make it a deal breaker. A garland tomato halo is a small, circular tomato that is grown in a greenhouse. The tomato is grown on a small, round, wire frame that is placed over a pot of soil.
