Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team are responsible for rescues on the mountain and risk life and limb to rescue people from this and nearby mountains. Don’t become another of their statistics, so here are a few tips before you set off. Simple tips for safely ascending Tryfan As well as navigation and scrambling skills, this is mountaineering awareness to realise that this is going into a dangerous part – I need to turn around and go and find another way, whereas people get very tempted to continue on their way, especially in descent. I did not jump between Adam and Eve because truly, I knew nothing about the tradition. It was raining and windy and it never crossed my mind. This was my second walk on Tryfan, the first one some years earlier had been to Bwlch Tryfan and then along the Heather Terrace therefore missing out the top crest. This time I was aiming for as many high points as possible so the summit points of Tryfan, Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr were all plotted into this 7.2 mile spectacular.

In winter, snow, ice and verglas can again add to the difficulty. Ice axes and crampons are most definitely required in full winter conditions, as well as the knowledge of how to use them.” SH663591 Continue in the same direction to the smaller South Peak, then descend the South Ridge – also a Grade 1 scramble, but much shorter and easier than the North Ridge, and not much more than a bouldery walk. The way is generally obvious as it skirts W around the Far South Peak. I was coming to terms with my gender dysphoria and that month alone was one of the most difficult and yet reparative instances of my life. Chris has extensive experience both with the team and personally as a climber, and his local knowledge of the mountains around the Ogwen Valley make him an ideal guide for the ascent. But initially, they’ll go up there; one person will be responsible for the first-aid and casualty care and there will be another person possibly taking rope to access in or access out but it usually goes as a team of three.” Conveniently, Tryfan is located very close to the A5 meaning that there isn't a long approach to the bottom of the mountain making it probably the most accessible mountain in Snowdonia.

Tryfan may also be climbed by the south ridge, which links the mountain (via Bristly Ridge) to Glyder Fach. The route begins at Bwlch Tryfan, the col between Tryfan and Bristly Ridge. The col is reached by a path leading up from Idwal Cottage to the west, passing through Cwm Bochlwyd. This cwm contains Llyn Bochlwyd. I felt so bad for dragging mountain rescue out but this was a call I'm glad I made. As I know I wouldn't be here today.. We will send you out a detailed kit list after you book with us and we can give you advice about what to buy if you have booked onto one of our walks.

When descending, a safer route near the bottom of the path marked on the map is to turn right and traverse to meet the main path to the East. The route we did was about 4-5 km long and we gained a height of 600 m. Depending on your level of fitness, experience in scrambling and the number of breaks (photo-taking, rest, admiring the view) you take, the hike can take between 3-4 hours to complete. In terms of the best time to climb Tryfan and the Tryfan North Ridge in winter, I can imagine that if it’s icy and snowy then this climb is going to be for experienced climbers only. Foreign Currency:Whenever we can we prefer to pay in local currency and for that we always use our Wise card.We can easily withdraw money from the ATM or pay by card at most shops and restaurants.

The Tryfan North Ridge Grade 1 Scramble is a challenging route, full of contrasts. The scramble starts off from Llyn Ogwen, wherever you can get parked, by climbing up to the Summit of Tryfan and the twin obelisks of Adam and Eve, along Tryfan’s North Ridge – the longest sustained grade 1 scramble in Snowdonia (with a down scramble on Tryfan’s South Ridge to boot). Finish this outing off by ending the day in a more sedate manner by stopping off at the Glyderau’s two main lakes of Llyn Bochlwyd and Llyn Idwal. Those after a challenge can continue over Bristly Ridge and complete the Bochlwyd Horseshoe. Begin from Llyn Ogwen (There is free parking in the laybys alongside the lake) and then walk down to Idwal Cottage. Take the path which leads up toYou’ll find rare plants and feral goats among these spectacular mountains, plus ravens and peregrine falcons. There are several gorgeous mountain lakes, too. Among the most beautiful is Llyn Idwal, centrepiece of Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve, Wales’ oldest. At the northern edge is Llyn Ogwen. According to legend, this lake is the last resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. From this point it’s all about finding the best possible way up based on your abilities. The only thing to be aware of is that you don’t want to go too far to either right or left to avoid some very deep gullies. Don’t be afraid to use your hands and take it slow if needed. Let faster people behind you pass if necessary. You don’t want to feel anxious and rush a movement. You came here to enjoy yourself after all.

The Heather Terrace path follows a geological feature on the mountain’s East Face and is one of the easier ascent routes. It leads underneath the major climbing routes and will bring you to the bwlch, from where the South Ridge can be used to reach the main summit, though even this involves some scrambling. To get to Tryfan via the North Ridge, head for the southern shores of Llyn Ogwen, right along the A5 expressway. There are multiple car parks just off the road - the one furthest towards the lake’s eastern end gets you closest to the direct ascent. Route InformationThe team will often send up an advanced group to render immediate help to a casualty. “To a degree, a hasty party is first come, first to serve. We’re here in the mountains; we’re not a town-based team, so it takes time for team members to get here before they’re deployed on the mountain and we’re all trained in casualty care to varying degrees.
